Firing a 303 in a 280 Ross

As to Hatcher, he was the Director of Accidents and every single accident with a US military rifle passed through his office, over his desk, and the investigation was done by him and his staff. I think we can regard the chapter in "Hatcher's Notebook" regarding accidents with US military rifles as about as close to absolute Gospel as we can get.

And the man must have been a wonderful lecturer. I first read the book about 45 years ago, when I was still in high school. Read it just like a novel, it was SO well written. Over the years, I have almost worn out a copy, but I learn something new every time I open it. I would regard the book as the very top of the list for anyone who really WANTS to understand what goes on when we press the trigger. And, unlike most other US writers, Hatcher is brutally honest, even when it comes to Springfields.

Understated!

I would say that it would be impossible to chamber a 30-06 cartridge in a 270 rifle, but a 308 will go into a 270 with a SAAMI max chamber. That would be a sure recipe for some excitement.
Likewise, an 8x57 will not chamber in a 30-06 rifle with a tight chamber and proper headspace, but it will go in some military chambers, which tend to be cut on the generous side. Another one I have seen that does not involve an oversize bullet is the 270 in a 7mm Mag trick. This can ruin a rifle, but does not always do so. I also picked up several 7mm cases at the range one day that had obviously been fired in a 300 Win Mag chamber.
Years ago, I found some 303 Savage cases at a gravel pit that some yo-yo had fired in his 303 British! Several times I have seen guys shooting 22 long rifle ammo in an old 22WRF pump, this always ruptures the cases, and is a dangerous practice. Darwin awards should be handed out all around. Regards, Eagleye.
