Firing cartridges designed for African game for no good reason.

Yep, I'm a loser because I had a Gov't and outfitter insisted entourage of 7 people...........You know what MMC.........when you can afford to go and hunt elephants, you will see that you have no say over who accompanies you, or the size of your Gov't decreed entourage. You denigrate me because I have knowledge of the true big bores and elephant hunting..............

You know what guys, I think I have taken about all the sh!t I'm willing to take on this site while trying to help fellow shooters and hunters. Trying to guide them with cartridge and rifle selections for different hunting situations that I have experienced...............but every computer expert knows more than me and calls me down, despite my experience.................so y'all know what, I quit...........Get your advice from computer experts who have never set foot in the bush in NA and certainly not in Africa or Asia, because they know way more than I do, and will tell you so. I doubt I'll ever post on CGN again...............Y'all have a good time..............

Douglas

Don't do that Douglas!!! :mad:There's a lot of others here that should take that route but not you!! Your knowledge of and skills with firearms along with your experience in the field, far surpasses that of 98% of the rest of us here.

My brother and hubby chopped a rem 700 in 416 rem mag to 20" bbl and fitted a ramline synthetic stock to it after it split the wooden stock it came with at the tang.
It weighed 7 3/4 pounds
They drilled a integral muzzle brake into the barrel and it was still a tooth rattler even with milder loads.
We sold it with no regrets.
It was a sassy beast as paw described it.

I have this weird urge to buy a 458 WM and it does not seem to be passing.

Looking for the perfect one built on a standard long action before I pull the trigger though. Might need to pad out the lower end first as well.

I know the urge well. I've got a Winchester M70 in .458 WM on it's way to me right now and it will be the 5th. one I've had to hunt and play with. I've had so much fun with the .458 Win over the years that I just keep coming back to 'er.:)

Had not checked out this thread for a while, boy it sure took a turn for the worse. One arguing from a intellectual point, the other offering experience.

I have seen a thread recently about hunting Moose with cast bullets. Sure you could, but i live where you need several weeks and lots of gas money to go hunt Moose in the North Peace River>>>>or wait for a draw for the south province. When you spend that money, time, or get lucky in the draw why would you.....shoot a Moose with a cast bullet, when you have something better. Use the best tool.

To get back to the thread, why would you spend $50K to go Elephant hunting and use a 45-70. Lots of guys try big bores, dont like the recoil and resell them on this EE.....cheap. Just buy a big bore, shoot your (insert African big 5) come home and resell it in the EE for what you paid.

Sad to see Douglas leave, and i hope he reconsiders.

:( You and me both. I'll wait a few days and if there's no further action or posts from him, give him a call. Got some Buff questions he can very likely clear up for me.
Ya, from the input from  a couple of individuals, it sure didn't take long for this thread to 'head south.

He is online right now, try a PM if you have a question.

Well.... I for one share Douglas' opinion..... The .45-70 pops up way too much when discussing big bores and African hunting.......

I will also throw my vote in the bowl and state that Douglas not posting is a loss to the community...... In terms of experience, his is hard to match...... The guy created his own caliber and went on to harvest an awesome whitetail with it...... How cool is that?.....

Fair enough, and by the same token, if I find the need for YOUR input and/or expertise, I'll sent you a PM. In the meantime.................... .

Sure, if I can help with something you can PM me or post on a thread.

Plenty of people have come and gone from CGN. They are all grown ups and if they choose not to participate, I'm going to respect that and I'm not going to beg them to return.
