First 10/22 build, school me on barrels and stocks.

Was gifted an SBI C-71 receiver for my birthday and trying to blow a modest piece of my tax return to complete the project….

Ordered up a few goodies today
Ruger BX trigger
Stainless pin set
Dlask buffer
SBI adjustable v-block
Dlask charging handle and spring set
Kidd scalloped bolt

Now I’m stuck on trying to decide on a stock and barrel…. The Magpul hunter stock would likely fit the bill for me as the gun will mostly be used at the local range or an occasional trip to the gopher patch and I’ve seen a few YouTube vids where they seem to produce some impressive accuracy with well matched rifle builds, are there any other $200-$400 options to look at that I may have missed? I do have a fair collection of AR buffer tubes, grips, stocks etc but most chassis Ive looked at seem to be more run&gun focused and don’t really want to go in that direction….

I’m also kinda at a loss when I start looking at barrels, lots of very pretty tubes on the market but really all I want is something that’s going to last a long time and shoot exceptionally well, kinda leaning towards a green mountain fluted stainless bull barrel but open to suggestions on other options between 16”-20”…. And leads on who may have them in stock?

The Magpul stocks are pretty nice but I found I still did not like the angle of the grip. I prefer a more vertical grip, Pro Mag Archangel or KRG Bravo (personal preference).

I have tried a few barrels. Dlask, Tactical Solutions, Green MTN. and Kidd. For the money my best is a 17" Heavey Taper Green MNT. Loves all lower (lower!?) Eley. I also have a Green MNT fluted 16" tapered that shoots quite well, and it is paired with a SBI reciever.
 
Pretty sure dlask uses green mountain blanks, Kidd and volquartsen use Walther blanks. Tactical solutions? Idk but you’ll find threads with beat up chamber ends because of how their light barrels are constructed.
 
Green Mountain provides very good value, mine produced 5 shot 1/2" groups with SK Standard Plus. I did have to polish the bolt, to get it to cycle standard velocity target loads reliably.
 
You won't go wrong with a green mountain barrel. They are good. We've been using Keystone Sporting Arms barrels lately and the results have been excellent, so that's an option too. Make sure you use an adjustable style v-block. As for length 16" is fine. IMO I find 18" and 20" too long and changes the balance of the rifle too much. A longer barrel doesn't mean more accurate.

The Magpul hunter stock is a solid choice. You could also look at Boyds as well.
 
This is a timely thread. I've been wanting to add a semi-auto 22lr to my cabinet (haven't owned one in years).
I like the Bergara BXR but there's none around to be had so I'm now considering piecing one together too.
Very interested in the final outcome. Be sure to post pics and detail what's on the parts list.

Aside from "not run&gun", can you be more specific about the type of shooting you want this gun to do? You've been around here for a while, maybe you already know that this thread is mostly going to get you "my favourite flavour of ice cream" responses.

I’ve dealt with Jerry in the past, I’m sure he will eventually drop in and give his .02… but the point of this thread is to create conversation and sift thru the “I only use blah blah because it’s the best in the world” responses incase I’ve missed anything while doing my own poking around….

This rifle is nothing special, it’s going to shoot small groups at 50, chase shotgun shells at 100, decimate the gopher population around Lloydminster…. It just needs to be a fun gun not a serious target rifle and not an ultra light race gun…

That said… I’m really diggin the KRG and the Oryx stocks now and have a few feelers out for GMB 16.5” fluted barrels, nothing set in stone yet tho.

Any particular reason you want the barrel to be 16-20"? Personally, I like shorter for a fun gun, and longer for a field use gun.

Do you want any modularity in the stock? Adjustable grip, LOP, cheekrest? More for range use or field use?
 
There are a lot of stock options, and what to use depends on what you're going to use the rifle for. The Magpul hunter stock is a good choice. Another favourite is the Spectre chassis with an MDT carbine stock on the back (I find an AR buffer tube & stock wobble too much where they meet). With an AR-style handgrip you have the option of the regular angled one or a more vertical one suited to prone shooting.

A regular stock has a bit of vertical kick because the recoil vector goes over your shoulder (hardly anything in a .22) and lets you use a low-profile scope or iron sights, while an inline chassis-style stock needs a higher scope mount.

If I was building off a short chassis I’d be working around a 12” barrel, 16”-20” IMHO looks better in a stock than when you need to add a muzzle device to keep powder burns off the forend cap…. It’s a personal preference thing.

I don’t need a modular chassis, as long as I have LOP and a good cheek riser I’m happy.

If I decide down the road I want a modular system I’ll build a Gucci one with a nice side folder ��

GMB is slim pickings at the moment, I ended up tracking down an 18” blued bull barrel…. If I decide it’s not comfortable I guess I can chuck it into the lathe and make some adjustments ;-)
On the positive side I saved enough going that way I can splurge and add a bit more to my stock budget, a KRG Bravo is in reach now…. So is the Oryx… decisions decisions…
I did order your adjustable V block on Friday with the Ruger BX trigger… got mixed up and thought I ordered the Dlask but they were out of stock.

Keep in mind you can't make that barrel shorter. Turning it down to less than 18" makes it a prohibited device because of stupid laws.... you could re contour it however. Or flute it if you have the setup for that.

If you're looking for a chassis, you should checkout ours. While it is super light I did design it for precision shooting. It also works for run and gun, which is how I mostly use it, and why most of the pics of it are in the configuration. I am currently doing a build for CPRS.

I’d likely just turn it down to a heavy taper, looking at GMB’s site it would be darn close to 3/4’s of a pound weight savings…. More realistically tho I’ll likely shoot it as is a whole bunch over the summer and then next year I’ll replace it with something else and end up with enough spare parts to order up another receiver and build a second rifle :)

If you come up towards Grande Prairie in the summer give me a heads up and bring a rifle!
 
I can’t recommend the Kidd Ultralight enough. Its super light, very accurate. Mine replaced a McGowen stainless barrel and the Kidd outshoots the much heavier McGowen easily.
Then again a lightweight barrel might be a waste if you’re using it in a chassis. The bull barrel might be your best bet.

Makes sense. It's hard to find exactly the right compromise for a multi-use rifle.

Just a consideration - I NEVER would have thought I'd want a long barrel 22LR rifle, but after trying one with a 24" barrel it is now by far my favourite for field use. With this rifle, for the ammunition that I use, I don't need hearing protection at all. I didn't really realize how much of a drag it was having to use hearing protection until then. The difference in the shooting experience is truly remarkable, and easily worth the compromise of a longer rig.

But I still have my shorter barrel rifles, of course!
 
The KRG is a very comfortable and rigid stock, keep in mind the short length of pull on these. You will need their fixed or adjustable butt stock or make your own.

The Oryx is heavier for offhand shooting, but super stable.

My 1022 has been in an ATI folding stock for ten years and taken thousands and thousands of gophers . It’s good enough for me .
