Unsure if this is the right forum but I will give it a go.

I have owned hundreds of guns but never done a build. The gunsmith I used in the 90’s when I used to shoot lots can’t remember being a smith now. So I am a complete noob looking for advice. I don’t know where to start or who to talk to. I am in cranbrook area of bc but not scared to ship etc.

End goal is a 250 AI. For reasons I can’t explain.

Any advice on barrel twist, actions etc is welcome. Also recommendations on who can do this for me. I was thinking rem 700 due to availability and selection of parts.

It’s not what I need but what I want.

I am not good with words if this is confusing. And will answer any questions.

Thanks

So whats your ideas? old school vintage ?
bolt, lever ?

Thanks for the questions.

I never seem to be very clear.

New, modern bolt. I have vintage 250-3000’s in 99’s I wish to not mess with. I want a fun shooter. I might even brake it so I can see holes in paper. Likely will hunt with it.

Hope this helps.

Guntech is in BC just had him trim a barrel for me and turnaround time was super quick, and amazing to deal with.

There are also a few others on here.

In AB Custom Gunworx does great work as well as KS Arms in Edmonton. They make their own barrels so might be a one stop shop for you.

I’m sure there are lots of others, just not familiar with them all.

I wouldn't bother going the AI version... build it on a Model 7 action and make it light for hunting...

Or build it on a 700 and make it heavy for paper and a pig for hunting...

And I would suggest a .260 Remington over the .250 Savage.

Thanks, I have several .260 rem as it is my favorite hunting caliber.

I don’t need this gun. I want it. I want to build a nice gun.

Thanks again.

Without being rude I appreciate caliber suggestions but it is the only thing I will not change. It’s what I want. And I want to find someone to build and work with me.

Thanks.

Insite arms.
Or do it yourself.
You could pick up a 783 for $450 and use that action to build off.
Jerry at Mystic precision, should be able to hook you up with a prefit barrel.
Or maybe IBI.
The trigger in the 783 is pretty decent, I've got mine adjusted to 2.5 lbs.
Pick up a set of go / no go gages ,an action wrench and a better stock and your all set.
It's not that difficult.

Thanks, I don’t know how to do it myself, reason for post. I’d happily entertain any way I can make this happen.

SCG.

It's not that difficult, the prefit barrels make it pretty easy.
You tube has lots of info on this.
I'm after doing a couple and it's really pretty easy.
Unless you want to go super Gucci, the Insite arms,Chou Brothers, etc, is your huckleberry.

My rem 783 6.5 Creedmoor shoots just as good as couple of higher end custom builds I had.

As for twist , Google.. ( lol ) says 1-10.

I'd check IBI barrels, see if they can make you a barrel

Appreciate insight, as I stated I don’t know where to start.

I’d be happy for a smith to do it. I’d like a quality build and willing to pay.

Thanks all

Well,Insight arms is what you're looking for.
They sell Hardy Barrels as well.
Gary Eaken (Bighorn) out of BC can hook you up with a Stiller action as well.
A couple of years ago,Insite built me a .308.
Stiller action
20 inch Carbon Fiber Wrapped barrel
Timney Single stage trigger
Cadex Chassis.
It was beautiful!!! Ha ha

It ran me about $3800 though.

Thanks for response. I am a tradesman and know where my strengths lie. I want someone that knows what they are doing to put this together for me. Yes, I probably have the tools and skill set to assemble but a true gunsmith knows what I don’t. It’s not just screwing pieces together. Thanks though.

First off - build what you want. You don't have to justify your choice for any of it (action, cartridge, barrel....) to anyone. Two gentlemen come to mind that have built rifles for me, you can't go wrong with either. David Henry from Bentley, AB (on here under his name) and Bob Galloway from Rocky Mtn. House AB (for the life of me I can't think of his shop name or handle on here). For barrels there are any number of quality makers out there, many sold by site sponsors. An option would be Bob Jury out of Red Deer AB. I know of a lot of people that use his barrels and personally have four of them - all good shooters. You can look him up on facebook if you have it. For twist rate - figure out what bullet you want to shoot then look up a twist rate calculator on line to figure it out. You must have an idea of expected velocities, ballistic coefficients can be looked up as well. Berger bullet site has a calculator I believe.

For sure,no problem with that either.
Another thing to look out for is, some Smith's want you to supply all the parts, and some will supply them for you.

I found it easier to go with one who supply's the parts and installs.
Save you the headache of searching everything out and ordering from multiple companies.
Plus when you go custom, with all the parts supplied, you get lots of free advice.

Like I said ,Insite arms is a one stop shop.
Or you can send parts to them and they can install them.

That's not a problem... you will have to decide if your .250 AI will be light or heavy and what action you will use... and what scope and mounts... these are your decisions. There are hundreds of qualified smiths that can do this...

Just looked up the cal.
Pretty interesting stuff.
I checked my Hornady 10 th manual, but it only had the 250 savage listed.

Thank you for all info I will look those guys up.

I am set on caliber I want. I don’t need a super high end custom but think this will cost me about $4k to get what I want. Want someone good that wants my money to build what I want.

I am very easy to look for and source parts if needed. This is so new to me I don’t know where to start.

Yes, I probably could buy parts and assemble it myself but it’s not my strength.

My pea brain thinks the action and trigger should run about $1k, barrel about $1k, stock/chassis about $1k and smith and things I forgot another $1k. Thinking I can get a semi custom in the caliber I want for $4k. Maybe I smoked yo much as a kid...

Thanks all as I do appreciate every single response.

Thanks! I just need one good one to open a dialogue with me, I know none.

We can chat about everything. I’ve never done this before so it is intimidating.

Thanks again.

Fuc ya!
Stiller action,or something similar.
CFW barrel,( benifits of a ,heavier barrel but with the weight of a light barrel)
Or any custom barrel.( pretty much).
Timney trigger(or something similar)
Tactical chassis (cades or MDT)
Or classic stock.

And what I meant about prefit, its just a barrel that's already cut and chambered, you just remove the nut and barrel from your existing rem or savage.

Then you screw your prefit on,set it up with go/ no gages and tighten up the nut.
Definitely not a custom, but it works great and its tons of fun, just assembling it.
