First build help

I like your choice of calibre, and the last rifle Im hoping to build for myself will either be a std 250, or a 250 AI. No need for justification, wanting is all the reason you need. For me personally I would like something like the Rem Model 7 action, or, if I can find one, an 1960's BSA regent action. A #2 contour barrel [I think], and fitted to either a high end carbon fibre classic style stock, or a simple classy walnut stock. I will have the barrel and action Ceracoated in a matt "blue" colour so it looks like an old school matt bluing job. And top it all off with a Kahle's 1.5-6 scope. I would recommend some research in to barrel twist, standard 25 cal twist rate is 1 in 10, maybe 1 in 9 would suit the heaviest projectiles.
And see if you can find a gunsmith that explains the actions and consequences for each and every part of the build. Like is 1-9 gonna be better, if so how far out do you want to seat the projectile, which will require x amount of room in the mag, does your action choice have that length of mag, or will it require a custom mag. Each choice you make will have something that needs to be considered. Is there a stock of your choice with the appropriate inletting for your action choice? Choose a gunsmith thats happy to help you with all the alternative components and who wants to enjoy the build as much as you do.

I choose this caliber because of my love for the 250-3000’s and I can still stay in the parent case family. Where I hunt stumbling on Elk can occur and the extra punch to use heavier bullets “incase” will be nice. Plus it’s unique, especially for the area I live in.

Thanks for the mag tip. I just learned I can get a reamer to suit any bullet I want for OAL but it didn’t dawn on me that they may not fit in the standard mag. I have been reading and talking to anyone that will listen about this caliber and build. One gentleman suggested I may want to use a long action so I can have the larger bullets seated out more to maximize my case capacity. He was older and all the new stuff, like custom mags, might solve this problem that he is unaware of. I don’t know nor do I know if it is worth going to a long action, yet.

I keep flip flopping on whether I am just going to get a Rem 700 in a caliber with the same bolt face, blueprint it, upgrade trigger, bed/pillar the stock and toss a good carbon fibre barrel on it or if I am going to totally start from scratch. Methinks the mag feed with cartridge OAL will probably determine this.

Thanks for all the replies you all have brought up things I would never have thought of.

And you can't really go wrong with this idea... "Rem 700 in a caliber with the same bolt face, true the action and bolt, "bump" the bolt, upgrade trigger, bed/pillar the stock and toss a good carbon fibre barrel on it".

Thanks for all your insight. I appreciate it. It’s my first and maybe last build. I am trying to real myself in on costs after dumping a sh1t pile on a competition level .22.

Anything else anyone can ask or suggest to make this good and smooth is welcome. Methinks it will take a year to gather parts I want. Any ‘smiths want this job?

When you are ready to go get back to me if you want... it's kind of a thing I do... I let my customers source the parts, I provide the labour.

I do not inlet for aftermarket bottom metal... order the stock you want inletted correctly.

Theres rem 700 actions for sale, you just need to find them.
I think they run around $600, then add the cost of smith work.
Or you might find a good used donate gun ,off the EE.
Check the EE for CFW barrels and custom triggers as well.
Theres always new stuff on there.

Not sure if rem produces 10 rnd mags,if that matters to you.

Here's a guy that shows his approach to truing a Remington 700 action https://youtu.be/n191F9c1YiQ ... he also demonstrates some of the issues that can arise - there are 13 video's in his series ... I enjoyed watching them and couldnt help wondering what the cost would be to have this work done. And how many people would proceed as he does or take another approach.

Labour to true a 700 $175, bump the bolt $75, thread, chamber, crown, stamp a contoured barrel $250 - $275. Glass bed and float in a stock that fits to start with $100.
