I'll be heading on my 1st black bear hunt ever in Oct on the northern pen. of Newfoundland. Any tips or techniques I should be aware of? Or any advice at all.

I am sorry that I have no advice to offer you. But I wish you the best of luck!
I guess I can offer one tidbit.. when it comes to bear hunting, get the biggest most powerful .cal rifle your legally allowed in your province and that you can handle with a heavy gr bullet.

Good luck! and if you get one post pix!

The bigger the better in my eye's. If I were to shoot a bear, I would want to make 100% sure it is dropped right then and there. I dunno. .303 sounds like a nice round to put through it.

What are you using Chinook?

Bears are not that hard to kill, shoot what your most comfortable with and don't take any marginal shots. If you area is like BC the bears are thick, if you pass on one because it won't present you with a nice braodside, wait till the next one. I've shot a few bears and find that the spooked / alert ones always are the hardest to bring down. The ones that are completly unaware of your presence go bang flop!!! Good luck.

Ya but wouldn't it be a wise choice to go with the biggest cal that you feel most comfortable with with BC Grizzlies around? I know I sure as hell would ;)

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize you were from Newfoundland, I am not sure if there are gizzies there or not.

I'll be shooting weatherby mark v 30-06. Chances are 180 gr. rounds. looking at the new winchesters, forget the name right now but they are around $50 for 20 rounds

30-06 is a nice gun. 180gr rounds is a good choice too. What are you going to use? Partitions?

Like I say not sure what they are. They are the new winchesters, silver casing, then black with a red tip. Saw them at Complete Gunsmithing here and figured if they cost that much they must be good

Sure Dave.

Only suggested that I would go with the largest cal rifle possible. Can never be too safe. Regardless of where you are when your in bear country. I had a friend that had a bear see him and run up the tree he was on. I sure as heck would want the most powerful rifle I could accurately shoot in a situation such as that when it came to my life or the bears life ;)

Sounds like sound advice to me, wouldn't you agree?

I won't be up in any trees for the hunt. Mainly just sitting up on the hill overlooking a valley from 250-300yds away watching tha bait and waiting for a bruin to show up.

hows the hunting season going for you, seeing as your have a firearm prohibition on your self...no offence, but if you don't have a clue, don't give one

don't have a pb&j sandwich in your pocket Yogi likes them :dancingbanana:

30-06 is more than enough gun for black bear. In reading your posts you say your bullets as made by win have a red tip and weigh 180gr. Since I long ago gave up factory for handloads I'm a little foggy as to whether or not these would be Nosler Ballistic Tips or thier new XP3 bullets (think thats what they are called) I had  s**tty  results with Ballistic Tips on bears. Use something different than these and you'll be fine.;)
Good luck

I popped my spring bear with a 338 WM, 250 gr nosler partition. Shot was about 260m up hill. It passed inside the left shoulder and out behind the right shoulder taking both lungs with it. The round left the same size hole going in as out.

30 06 with a premium bullet such as the Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, Speers Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, or Barnes Tripple Shock X should be more than enough.

Good luck!

X2 , only I'll be in Bobcageon. My first hunt ever! help!:runaway:

Here's a tip:Don't listen to people who think you need a friggen RPG to kill a black bear. Hey Northwoods, you ever seen a bear. Black bears are not really that big. In NFLD the bears are pretty big(I know I am from there and got sick of shooting bears) but they aren't over 500LBS. I think you will be fine with the 30-06 but I wouldn't pay 50$ a box for factory ammo. Look around for moose guts left by hunters, or find some berries. The bear has one thing on his mind now,FOOD.

A friend dropped a 500+ LBS grizz last fall, 30 06 with 180gr Winchester CT FailSafe, one shot, one kill. Your 30 06 is more than enough. Don't know much about the new XP3 rounds. If they hold up like the CT FailSafe your laughing.

From my last post, my Black was just a hair under 200LBS dressed at the butcher which should put him in the high 300LBS range while he was walking. The 338 WM was WAY TO MUCH gun for that bear. I would not hesitate to use your 30 06, you'll be fine.
