First ever bear hunt

yeah, thats some good advice there...
got any more great tips

aren't you the guy that was telling everybody about your firearm prohibition???
no offence, but if you don't havea clue...don't offer one....

Well I don't know where you come from pal. but where I live there are bears every where, big ones. No lil blackies here. There was a guy that was ripped out of his tent in the middle of the night sleeping by a black bear here. They arn't the most friendly beasts every where in Canada. Some are chicken ####s. others have balls.

I don't think my advice was bad? I also have a buddy I know last year that had a blackie run up his tree where he had his stand. I would think that I would want a pretty powerful rifle when it came to my saftey in a situation such as that.
Besides, I don't know about you, but I love shooting off the big calibur guns. Or can you handle it? :p Lovely how you alway's try and attack me when I have never done anything to you.

Word to you sir, I am a legally licensed to hunt and purchase firearms so #### or get off the pot with me. Or come on up here and I will show you how much respect I have for the sport of hunting and target/skeet shooting.
But seeing that your always an asswipe to me, I wouldn't invite you up to my cottage if hell froze over :runaway:
Cheers

oh hell, you don't need a damn cannon to kill a black bear. they are surprisingly easy to kill. Shot my first one this spring with a .303.

*ADVICE*

Be carefull when walking up to a black bear you have just shot. blackies like to play dead then when you come up on them they can jump up and atack you. (they don't know whats attacking them or whats happening so they play dead and wait for whatever it was to come try and eat him, it's a defensive mechanism) the bear I shot with the .303 whent BANG, FLOP and and stayed down for a good 10-15 seconds then got back up again and whent about 25ft into the bush. (just be carefull and make sure it's dead) they can be tricky little buggers.

I consider a .303 a powerful bear rifle :) I have a couple in full mil furniture and my special sported No4 mk1 just for moose.
:) Love em

So do I. but the people saying they "think" a 30-06 should do it, or the folks that think you need a 338mag etc etc etc are out to lunch. BEARS ARE EASY TO KILL. (black bears anyway).
not that there is anything wrong with using those larger calibers, but you most certainly don't need one and anyting in .30 cal will work fine so will some calibers in the sub .30 range as well. most bears will be shot less then 100yrds so you don't need supper long range bust a quater at a million yards guns.

I shot mine at about 40yrds.

chinnok given your description of how you plan on hunting try and place yourself with your back agaissnt a tree *larger then you* as its natural scent will somewhat help control yours and it offers an excellent source of camo and little opurtunity to be snuck up on.
also look into honey burns or molaases burns as well.
as for you gun any .30 cal is plenty of gun for blackies i use a sported .303 myself and have taken a few NS blackies with it have yet to fill my ontario tags since i moved here.

momma bear use same advice if your on the ground if your in a sand chain dumbdawg to the bait barrel and coat him in honney and molases and between the sounds of distress and the scent of honey your bear should coem in relativly quickly:D

Ya but wouldn't it be a wise choice to go with the biggest cal that you feel most comfortable with with BC Grizzlies around? I know I sure as hell would ;)

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realize you were from Newfoundland, I am not sure if there are gizzies there or not.

I myself wouldnt be taking any advice on bear hunting from a guy that does not know if there are grizzlies in Newfoundland or not

Hows the grizz hunting in northern Onterrible northwoodslivin?

:runaway:

OK, some usefull info here.
Bears like to come out around dusk. Set yourself in an area overlooking a berry patch or a steam, etc. It is all about food.
Or if you want to road hunt (it can be effective, but some consider it not really hunting), expect to see bears just around sunset time.

now don't tell me you need a .50 cal to take a bear.........

piss off and don't come back ya jack ass.......

hey, you never did answer Crazy Davey's question...Hows the grizz hunting in ontario.....:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

Nice bear grouseman, we have you beat for the bears in town over here in this metropolis :p. Here's one I took around 3 PM yesterday

I can send the fullsize to anyone who's curious as to how big he really is. The local CO figures 200-240 pounds. To get an idea of his dimensions look at the house window in the background and you'll get an idea of his size.

Jail bait? lol.. what ever you say kid. I come from Northeastern ontario. lots of big bears up here. lots of wildlife.
I like my big cal. guns. You use your wimpy arrows.
Before you go throwing cheap shots at me. why don't you educate yourself on WW2 battle rifles seeing that you don't know squat about them lol.
K now you can piss off and leave me alone, your picture speaks for it's self.. stupid troll kids.
PS that's an average run of the mill blackie up here btw.

I think the article below is why some folks think Black bears are hard to kill (atleast I assume it was a Black, perhaps one of those mystical Ont Grizzlies :runaway: ). I posted this over in the Articles Forum but since we are talking bear killing here I thought others might be interested.

Right tool for the hunt makes all the difference. I have taken 3 blackies with Compound Bow and Arrow and 2 died within 10 yards and one went 30 yards. All shots from under 20 yards, treestand. I have the bait station setup and I am working on killing number 4 with the Bow or perhaps my new Black Powder setup.

Big bear brought down in Northwood area
By THE CHRONICLE-JOURNAL
Sep 5, 2006, 22:42

It took five blasts from a shotgun for Thunder Bay police officers to kill an angry bear in the Northwood area Sunday evening.
It was the fourth bear Thunder Bay officers have shot and killed since Aug. 25, though they’ve had more nuisance bear calls than that, said Staff Sgt. Alan McKenzie.
An Inglewood Court resident called police at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday to report a 350-pound bear was in the neighbourhood, headed for Ashland Place.
“It was in the backyards scooping garbage,” said McKenzie.
A conservation officer’s tranquilizer dart had little effect other than to anger the bear.
“It started jumping fences into adjacent yards where people were standing (and) peeking over fences, thinking they were safe on the other side of the fence in their yard.”
At that point, police decided to shoot the bear because of the danger posed to the spectators, he said.
The first shotgun blast sent the wounded bruin up a tree. And when it came back down, it was mad, said McKenzie.
Police and conservation officers “were in a yard standing between the bear and the people . . . and it started charging, so they had to shoot it,” said McKenzie.
It took four more shotgun shells to kill the animal, which fell about two metres from the police officers.
They prefer not to have to intervene in bear calls and would rather let a bear wander off if possible, he said.

Nice Bear

Hey Man Great Bear!!

I have been trying to get one with my bow, my buddy and I got close this spring but it did not happen!!
Happy shooting!!

Sometimes they get hit ,lie down and go to sleep. Other times they don't. It's when they fall out of the norm, don't run the right direction and take more than one bullet, that things go sideways. I've only seen it once, but it was pretty damn impressive:eek:

I've only ever shot a couple of bears so I'm no expert but I will relay what I do.

A bear is the only animal i puposefully shoot behind the sholder into the vitals. On Deer and moose I tend to aim for vitalsacompanied by either the near or far sholder to keep them anchored where they were shot.

But with a bear I'm more concerned about them being very dead when I apprach them opposed to being immobile. With a bear I always want a clean pass through to provide the best blood trail I can get because they dont really disturb the ground very much when they run.

I shot one this year with a 7mm-08, 2 years ago with a .308win and 3 years ago with a 338WM. All were equally dead. A 243Win with a stout bullet would be my smallest choice.
