Hey folks looking for a ballpark value on a first gen Vanguard in 25-06, rifle belongs to a buddy and want to make him a offer. I don't have any pics but its just a reg Vanguard with blued barrel and dark grey weatherby stock

There are technically 2 first gen Vanguards. If it's a straight stock without the monte carlo it's an older model and they did have a recall on these for the bolt. The later ones still have the 2 position safety and single stage trigger but have a monte carlo stock. Value likely in the $450 to $550 range.

When I bought my first Vangaurd it came with a cheap scope, cheap rings, cheap case all in less than $400.00 Canadian.
This was the blued rifle in .257 and the ammo was $5.00 a shot....
They got stupid expensive in the following years, but they sure are accurate if not a little heavy.
So, maybe $500.00 ???
You can go and surf the EE and see how far off I am or not.

Thanks guys, not to many 1st gen Vanguard around at the moment, he mentioned he paid $500 for it 4 years ago but that doesn't mean anything with today's prices. Just want to do my homework to be fair with an offer

My .257wby Vanguard was $499 at Wholesale Sports. That was the version with the Monte Carlo stock, before the Sub-MOA versions were even available (your choice was blued or stainless, that's it).

I remember pulling the target out of the box, it had one ragged hole in it for its 3-shot factory group.

Still have it, absolutely devastating on deer. Solid rifle.

The Vanguard line was introduced in 1970, if my memory serves me well they didn’t have synthetic stocks, are you sure it’s a first gen?

They had a few variations of the first gen. They had a synthetic by '85 or earlier.

When the series 2 came out I paid $400 for a brand new series one blued synthetic in 270 on clearance, not sure how long ago maybe 6 or 7 years. I don't think I have seen a used one that cheap since. I would probably pay $500, I have 4 of them 2 series 1s and 2 series 2s. I quite like them but they are heavy.

Lot's of Models are deeply discounted by the manufactures to justify the price they have now set for their newest model. The difference price between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Vanguards was approx $130.00 that was including the discounted close out price.

In the early 2000's Ruger discontinued the Stainless M77 MKII with the Zytel Stock (boat paddle) . They could be purchased for under $500.00, currently sell for closer to a thousand. In the mid 70's 303 motorized Lee Enfields sold for $25.00 to $30.00 . Swedish Mausers matching numbers were $45.00 to $70.00 through out the 80's.

What a firearm was purchased for at closeout, has no relevancy to current market value .

New Plain Vanguards are advertised from $759.00 to $849.00

You don't find many used Gen 2 listed for less then $650 or Gen 1 for $500.00 because at those prices they sell very quickly.
A Gen 1 at $550.00 is a good deal.

I bought a pile of the new S2's in S1 stocks (Vanguard X) a few years ago...all between $350-$499, there were tons of sales. The S1 trigger sucks, maybe $400 if it's like new.

Agreed with this! Your trader rating speaks of experience in buying/selling...
