After years of thinking about doing it, this year I actually got my **** together and took the firearms courses and got my PAL. I had my eye on the Colt Gold Cup Trophy .22 for a while, and I made it my first purchase. I brought it home November 1 and finally took it to the range on November 3.

I can't tell you anything about the accuracy (seems okay to me but I don't know anything). I was using cheap high velocity ammo and as a result (I hope that was the problem), out of 103 rounds fired, I had about 5 failures to feed from the magazine and 2 failures to eject. Most of these were when my girlfriend was shooting and she was not holding it tight enough. I did kind of expect this from the various reviews and comments I found on the internet, which all said it was fussy on ammo and preferred hyper velocity cartridges. Next time out I will go with the hyper velocity.

Can't wait to go out again, and also can't wait for the second gun to come in the mail !

Congrats. Hopefully the problems with FTE and FTF goes away with different ammo. The gun was on my buy list for awhile until I read a bunch of reviews on it. The only thing Colt about it is the name.

Congratulations on your Colt. Remember, as in with any auto, there will be a "break in" period. The FTF/FTE issues may be just that or typical .22 pistol a little fussy on ammo, etc. Or the gripping issue you mentioned. Likely, nothing major to worry about.

Have fun!

NAA.

Looks like a nice piece of kit, is it made by Colt or are they just putting there name on it? I'm sure the FTF and FTE problems will go away after you put a brick or two through the weapon.

I have one as well. I found CCI Mini Mags were the ticket to break it in. After 4 or 5 hundred rounds of this most anything will fead eject and fire.
Good Shooting

Congrats on your first HG!
I was eyeing one of these at my Range. They look really nice in person.
It should start to break-in after about 200-300rnds of good quality HV ammo.
Follow the manual reguarding cleaning, etc., and it should provide you with lots of cheap fun.

Check to see if the barrel is loose. You get a wrench with it. Mine had the barrel loose and was causing FTF. Once tightned the gun eats anything. I haven't tried subsonic (don't think I will or should). Hyper velocity will decrease your accuracy.(thats what I find anyways) Its a great gun. Very accurate. Has the weight and feel of a 1911. The finish is great. Alot of gun for the money.

I use Fenderal Gold Medal Target Ammo. 40 grain, 1080 fps. Very accurate and doesn't beat up your gun. Also don't be afraid of a decent amount of gun oil on the slide. I was running mine way to dry till someone who actually knew something was nice enough to show me.

Also I have shot someone elses Walther(Colt) 1911 22 with this recoil spring installed and it does make the action smoother. Might want to check it out, and for 6 bucks you can't go wrong. I have a couple ordered for myself.

I've got one, too. It definitely prefers 40 grain rounds. As long as the weight is right, it doesn't seem overly fussy about the difference between high velocity and hyper velocity.

Okay, thanks for all the great tips. To summarize: try different ammo, not necessarily hyper/high velocity, but maybe only after a break-in period; clean as per the manual; tighten the barrel (I did, it tightened up a slight amount, like 1/8th of a turn maybe); use a decent amount of oil; and consider an after-market recoil spring.

Sounds like you have it all covered but DO NOT over-tighten the thread barrel/frame screw. You will run the risk of stripping the threads in the frame....a little blue locktite works for me.

I went back to the range with new ammo. Previously I shot 103 rounds of Winchester Xpert HV 36 grain (1280 FPS), with a few FTF/FTE.

This time I shot 100 rounds of CCI Stinger 32 grain (1640 FPS). My gun LOVED this stuff - it seemed like a bigger bang and definitely a bigger flash, and absolutely no problems. These are copper-plated so the lead did not catch as it fed, which might have been the problem with the Winchester Xpert.

Then I shot 100 rounds of Winchester Super X 37 grain (1330 FPS). This also worked with absolutely no problems. Also copper-plated.

Then I attempted to shoot 100 rounds of Remington Yellow Jacket HP 33 grain (1500 FPS). My gun HATED this. I could hardly shoot 5 rounds without a FTF. The soft lead tips kept catching and digging in. I managed to shoot 50 rounds but I don't know what I'm going to do with the other 50 I bought.

Finally, I went back to the original ammo (the cheap one), Winchester Xpert. This time there were less problems and I managed to shoot off 100 rounds with no FTE and I think maybe 2 or 3 FTF.

So my gun now has 453 rounds through it, and seems to be breaking in. I bought some 40 grain too, which I will try next time (as suggested by a couple guys in this thread).

You can be the judge of my 10 yard accuracy: hahaha
