First Handgun - Like a "Honda"

First one? Keep it simple - M&P, XD, Glock (did I just recommend that? Must wash.) My first was a 226 in .40SW which had a looonnng trigger pull.

Also, there is the 1911 which we will leave you to discover later - as good things come to those who wait. Shoot some polymer now and then upgrade.

That video shows a sig p226 converting from 9mm to 22lr, can I also convert it to a .40 or .45 using the same technique/replacement parts?

I think that is a very utilitarian choice, I can essentially have 2 guns for little cost, .22lr is cheap, 9mm is a little more pop.

Some of the reviews of the Beretta were negative in that it is a heavy gun which can jam often due to the case coating.

So far I like the p226, if I can swap between 9mm and .40 or .45 then it seems like a logical choice. All reviews are positive, just like the glock 17, but I think I prefer the metal over polymer

Smith & Wesson M&P 9, or a Ruger P89 / P85 if you can find one.
Buying a Glock is like punching yourself in the balls. (IMHO)
Ruger Mark II .22LR Pistols are great if you can find a used one.
CZ 75B would be good as well.

You should be able to find any of these for $600 or less, (Except the Ruger .22, they will be more in the $400 range for a nice one)
They are all reliable. The Ruger P89 / P85 is not known for accuracy, but is tough as nails and will never fail you.

If possible... rent one first!

Still researching...

I think I've short listed to:

1) all metal
2) da/sa
3) reliable
4) accurate
5) 9mm/interchangable (.22lr nice to save money, or .40 if wanted for more bang)
6) shiny (if I can)
7) safety (I like safety features, does not bother me to have additional safety measures in place)

I think the Sig p226 is what I am looking for ... all metal, first pull da/second+ sa, reliable + accurate, 9mm interchangable, has safetys and decocking lever (I like this feature a lot), and according to enefgee's post can be had in stainless!

Damn, was all set on the Sig but I'm checking out Taurus, some of their guns have comparable features but are half the price! can even get stainless for $650ish

What is the general consensus on Taurus, for a first time gun owner who only shoots targets at a range?

You can get a Sig 220 all decked out like mentioned above IIRC. Someone else mentioned ammo cost; if you want to get good you will shoot quite a bit and the 45 is not exactly cheap to shoot. Mnay of the guys I shoot with own 45's, but none of them shoot them on a regulare basis; they all shoot their 9mm's in the summer and 38/357 revolvers during the winter. If you decide to go 9mm, and want a bit of flash, go to a Sig Elite Stainless, or a brush nickel plated CZ 85 Comabt.

Ain't gonna happen. The subcompact stuff is what is called 12-6 class prohibited. As a new RPAL holder you cannot ever get a 12-6 classification unless you have a relative that wills you their prohib gun. And then you can only own THAT prohib gun.

So you're stuck with the full sized handguns like the rest of us new folks from the last 12 years from where the law was put into place.
Not entirely true. Questar sells sub-compact Glocks like the Glock 26 and 27, they just have an extended barrel to keep them legal with Canadian barrel length laws.

What Taurus are you thinking?24/7 or pt92?

Seeing your requirements Beretta fits perfectly! and they only go for about $750. few years ago it was almost a $1000! FWIW you can't go wrong with one. Sigs are nice but not extra $300+ nice. ;)

1) What's the cheapest sig p226 I can buy? I realize the stainless options etc bump the price and there are many other startup costs I haven't factored in seriously enough yet.

2) I was looking at the taurus 24/7 g2 new for 2010

3) S&W MP9 has good reviews online

I like the functionality of taking down a sig and chambering different caliber in minutes, its like having two guns for a little more than the price of one. Considering MSRPs are always high, is it possible to get a sig p226 9mm in Ontario under
A 1000?

Get a Smith and Wesson M&P, its a great gun. Don't be another Glock drone!!!

had A ruger p91 was a very tough gun, had a sig 226 elite very ###y, had a CZ 85 solid accurate. but the best i shoot with is an m&p as much as i am not a fan of polymer it works best for me. give em all a try if you can then sign up for the EE.

Agreed! OP- I like your list of req's other than the shiny part. beretta would be a great choice (and you can get it shiny too) IMO SIG's are great too but for a first gun you should save some money for ammo as it will far exceed the cost of the gun rapidly.

Have fun choosing!

Do you guys like nutnfancy project on youtube?

I'm not an expert, heck I am just a beginner, but the guy seems legitimate and has put a lot of effort into creating videos for others to watch. you can tell he's passionate about guns, he rambles on and on.10min videos end up being 35 minutes split in 3 parts because he comes up with more info to spill.

I can tell his earlier videos were Glock biased, but he seems to be pointing out the fact that other guns are equally as good, just his preference is the Glock.

He commented poorly on the Beretta 92 due to it's weight and ability to jam frequently

ya, nutnfancy has good reviews, better than most online cuz he actually talks about stuff. though he sometimes goes off on a tangent....
