First pistol (Budget 500$)

Hi guys, i know the question has probably been asked 1000 times before but i couldnt find anything within my price range.

Basically, i am passing my course on sunday and i am already checking out the prices. I am expecting to get my PAL around end of octobre/novembre.

I will be buying 2 guns and i have a budget of 1000$ to start with (for the 2 guns).

So I am looking to get a combo of one restricted and one non restricted weapon (shotgun).

What hand gun do you guys suggest for a max of 500$ ? I want to start with something cheap to shoot but id prefer something better then a .22. I am open to buying used or new.

First of all, none of us own "weapons". $1000 isn't much of a budget. $650 or so for a new CZ75 and a $350 Rem 870, Mossy or even a cheap Weatherby...

When you think about it, this purchase will be your smallest in your shooting career. You will spend much more on ammunition in the long run. Skimping on firearm purchases may make you upgrade in the future...

Most would recomend starting handgun shooting with a .22LR.
In centerfire, Norinco 1911's and Jericho 941's, are hard to beat.

I dont mind upgrading on the long run so lets say buying 1-2 guns once in a while and get rid of the others later.

I just dont want to dish out a big amount to start with a crazy gun and then dish out more.
 
350$ for a Norinco 1911a and 250$ for a maverick 88 pump action and still have lots left over for taxes and ammo.

I love my Nork 1911

I am past my first pistol, the initial want for something with more bang than a 22 is understandable, made that mistake myself. I have ones with recoil and without, and I still have the most fun with those without. I highly recomment a gsg 1911-22 or a ruger single six. Start with something stronger and you will have to unlearn bad stuff later, ask me how I know this!!!!!!!!

As far as a handgun goes, nothing can beat a Tokarev TT-33 for the price. They come in a working, refurbished condition with a price ranging from $169 to $250, and you can buy 2280 rounds of milsurp ammo for $279 to $349.

I have put over 1500 rounds through mine with no gun issues, other than a few FTF's from 1950's ammo.

Good basic choices for a shotgun would be a Mossberg 500 series, that can be had for the low $300 range to $400's depending on the model.

The Stevens/Savage 350 is also a good choice for an inexpensive shotgun, and is available in the sub $300 dollar range in many places.

These recommendations are based on experience, and are designed to get you owning/shooting on a budget.

Rock solid pump is a Benelli Nova. $475 at Epps. Less 10% at LeBaron if you become a LeBaron club member (a very good idea).

You sure you don't want to get a CZ452/455 .22LR to start? Damn fine gun for the money. Go with the one with iron sights if you can't afford a scope now.

I'm biased. I started with these two.

Like you I wanted more than a .22 and was guided by others on here to go with .22LR first. Am I glad I followed the advice. Darn cheap to shoot and just as much fun.

Now looking for a .22LR pistol.

Go with a .22LR - you won't regret it.
 
If its not .22 then its not cheap to shoot. 9x19mm will run you $15ish for 50. Thats five magazines. Compare with .22 for $25 for 500 rounds.

Basically go to any of the sponsor's websites and price out ammo (http://www.theammosource.com/). Then decide how much will you be shooting and if you can afford five boxes of 9mm a year, or need five cases of .22.

As suggested, a handgun with a conversion kit potential will let you do both, alas for more moneys. Bottom line is:

SKS ($200ish) at 20 cents a shot
Norc HP9 ($350ish) at 35 cents a shot
Norc 9mm ($350ish) at 30 cents a shot (Chose from 1911, CZ75/85, Sig and other clones)

Of the .22s, there are a lot to choose from. Specifically look into
Bolt - CZ and Savage Mk 2
Lever - Henry/Browning BL22
Semi - Ruger 10/22

Last suggest - go to a gun store with your license in hand, and fondle every single pistol you can get your hands on. See what is most comfortable in YOUR hand.

You sould try a few handguns to see how you like the grip and the feel, don't only base your choice on your budget. You could always look at a used one (Glock17?,M&P9?). I have a few(Glock,Sig,1911,Rem.870) if you want to try them out PM me we can work something out if I don't have it CRAFM have a few rental.

Thanks for the offer. Thats very nice of you.I have shot some different guns at club de tir ville saint pierre but it was quite costly since i dont have the licenses yet and i tried different guns (shotgun, revolver and pistol.

then again you are absolutely right about trying different ones i guess if you guys attend events where you can bring guest ill try to make it for sure.

ps: im passing my course saturday for restricted firearms so my purchase is not for right now. Ill have plenty of time to try different guns.
 
Try all you can. I have:

Ruger SR9: very cheap, poppy, light, very slender profile. Too many safety things. Feels nice in a small hand. Looks pretty too. I wouldn't want to drop or ding it up. Plasticky trigger but you can get used to it. Make sure if you buy used that it was dealt with by the trigger recall. Any new one should be fine. Adjustable sights if you want. If we ever had the option to open carry and I still had it in my safe I would strap it on and feel comfy all day. Too bad we can't get the SR9c. Like a budget M&P.

Norc NP22 (Sig P226 copy): the opposite of that SR9. Ugly, heavy feels like you can use it for a hammer if need be. Very heavy stock trigger, especially the DA first shot. Needs a lot of rounds before it starts to work in but after that you can go to war with it. Out of the box you totally need to make sure it is lubed up and need to put in the range time to work in the trigger. People who've tried mine (after 3000 rounds) were pleasantly surprised at it vs its reputation.

I've graduated to a CZ SP01 and it is leaps and bounds over both of these but you get what you pay for :) Every other handgun I've tried is out of your price range. I'm probably keeping all of them because I like showing newbies the differences between all the makes. They all shoot 9mm but they all do certain things nicer than others.
 
As someone mentioned before, the Maverick 88 12 Gauge pump can be had for around $250 new. Also, an SKS would be a good starter.

If you hit the EE, you can get 3 guns for 1k

1- Maverick 88 or an SKS
2- GSG 1911
3- Norinco handgun of your choice with a larger caliber.

This way you will get just about everything you are looking for plus a .22 so you can shoot on the cheap.
