Ruger Mk.II or III.

Browning Buck Mark Pro Target, Ruger Target model Mk111 for something new. The right model High Standard or S&W41 in the used market.

We don't know what's the general location of were you live, so we can't suggest a retailer for you.

Sig Mosquitto is a pretty neat starter's gun. Mine is a lot of fun to shoot, and it loves CCI Mini Mag ammo. Quite accurate, too.

Only draw-back is that the trigger travel is a little bit long.

The Ruger set the standard, there are alot of nice pistols out there, used 41s, etc. but for a first pistol, get a Ruger.

If the looks don't make you throw up in your mouth, the Ruger is a solid, economical choice.... otherwise buy a fine looking Sig Mosquito and enjoy shooting something that looks like a real pistol! :D

** So where would be a good place to get one Im in the Ottawa On, region

Ruger Mark II or III Bull Barrel. Used High Standard (personally I did well with a Victor). A 41 if you can find one for that price.

I started with a Ruger Mark II and I still have it 20+ years later. I shot just about every ammo under the sun with that pistol and it would shoot everything you fed it. Thinking of putting a scope on it now for silhouette. I got a spring kit for it just havent installed it yet. Need lotsa time and NO interruptions. Last time I took it completely apart (down to the last pin) was 15 years ago. Guess its due.

My first handgun was a Ruger mark I. I have two Mark IIs also. I keep one for show and one I have loaned out to a new shooter. I also have a S&W model 41 and a High Standard model Citation. I also have a bunch of plinkers I won't mention.

My favorite is the High Standard. Feels the best in my hand, has a great trigger. While the S&W is good I don't like the balance. I've got the stock grips on it and don't like them that much either. Great trigger also. The Ruger is a great gun for the price. The only part I have an issue with is the spongy trigger. Most new shooters will not notice it. Only after shooting guns with better triggers, and learning to feel the gun, will most notice it. If you just go to blast away then you would never notice the difference.

Try as many as you can. Most people will let you try their guns if asked in the right way.

The Ruger is a very good choice and great for the money. If you can find a very good condition High Standard I would give it serious consideration. There has been some comments that the recent guns are not as good as the older ones. I have not seen the newer guns so I can't comment on this.

You can usually get a nice used Ruger Mk II for $300 or less. Biggest complaint of the ruger are the silly factory mag catch, and getting the lever open for disassembly. Other than those "less than perfect features", Rugers are pretty much tanks.

Want a good deal on a NEW MCM Margolin? My first pistol was a 70's vintage margo... simple design, very accurate, robust... but a little on the light side.

Drop me a PM...

As quite a few people already said, you can't go wrong with a nice used Ruger MK2. They have been around for a long time and there's plenty of accessories available for them.

As for the P22, I think it looks nice... and that's about the only positive thing I can say about so I'll pass. I'm sure there are some happy owner somewhere that will chip in.

The best thing to do really is go out to the range and try stuff... Once you know what you want, you can always mail order it if you can't find it locally.

P22... sweet merciful jeezes I would never buy another one. The thing ejected brass in my face all the time and after 1k rounds I took it back to Wholesale and exchanged it for a Ruger 22/45 Mk III ($310 there). The Walther may look cool but it's not worth it for what it costs. The Ruger is infinitely more reliable, though take-down is a pain.

If you want something a little more 'better looking', looking at the Tangfolio Force from Freedom Ventures, it's more expensive but looks cool.
