First plinking 9mm: Smith and Wesson SDVE or Norinco NP29?

I have an np29 that I got on sale and with a little work smoothed it out and got a 3lb trigger. I got a custom fit EGW bushing from Freedom Ventures which eliminated the fliers. My brother has an MP9 and I don't like the trigger pull but many others don't mind it.

Buy a better pistol to start with. By the you spend the money on parts and installation you are above the price of a decent used gun and you don't have to upgrade. Do that later if you wish. Spend more money up front and get something decent. Iam not a big fan of cheaper stuff. Some recommendations have been made , they sound good. For ever more money , I like my Remington R1.

Listen to the voices of wisdom who have chimed in, a used M&P is a much better route to go, there are many aftermarket parts for you to customize it to your liking. I don't own an M&P myself, but just about every one of my shooting buddies do, very nice handguns,,,,I mean, it's no Glock,,,but it's not bad :)

I had an SD9VE and thought it was alright because it was my first 9mm, it's not a good gun out of the box and takes some serious mods to make it better.

I traded mine in on a Girsan MC-28 an M&P9 clone but cheaper new than an M&P9 used. It comes with different back straps so you can make it fit your hands,
When I took it to the range I could not believe how much more accurate it was over the sd9ve. Check it out on you tube, I did and that's what sold me.

Ahhhhhh I don't think so I infected him with the M&P virus.....he will succumb once he learns he does not have to tip the gun down to get his sights aligned. Mooohhhhaaahah

I have to say there are some features of the S&W I like over my Gen 2 Glock. The mag well seems easier to feed a mag into vs my Glock. The mags eject with authority. The slide stop auto release feature when a fresh mag is inserted will speed up reload times. The Apex trigger is softer and the FO sights should help quicker target acquisition. It has features that make it a good gaming gun for sure.

I don't like the mag disconnect safety though. I didn't realize the M&P had a mag disconnect.

If you have a mag disconnect in that gun it is easy to remove. Youtube is your friend. IDPA ruled removal did not offend their rule book. I had one of the first iterations of the FS and it had the mag disconnect in the gun. It got removed early. The mag disconnect models are not seen often anymore. Most M&P's imported into Canada now do not have the mag disconnect.

Sdve-9 , $300. Plus tax, M&P range kits $569 -$599. New! You get a ton more gear with the range kit and it is reviewed much better than the sdve! I have an sdve9 haven't shot it, gave it to my wife! the price keeps going down on them, probably for a reason, put an extra $130 ish and jam in an apex trigger and spring kit to bring it up to the M&P or just get the M&P!

Sfrc sale ends today, M&P range kit , gun,4 palm swells, 3 mags, holster, mag pouch, ear plugs, maglula mag loader, case, $619 reg price, 12% off,,, free shipping! So about $540. Plus tax, shipped to your door!
Edit: sorry, the sale ended @ 9AM, odd time but they do put these on often so keep an eye out!

So I’m hearing the SDVE is something to avoid. If I want to go polymer, I’ll seriously consider the M&P 9.
I’m looking at $330 for a brand new NP29. Will check out a few in store to see if I can find a nice(ish) one.

I’ve always wanted a 1911, and I don’t mind putting some work into it smoothing it out. I haven’t read or seen any terrible reviews of one.

Apparently I was looking for some positive affirmation towards the Norc. I’ll guess I’ll wait until I handle one again as it’s been a year or two since I checked one out.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I’ll keep my eyes open for an M&P on EE and will try to get out and shoot some of my buddies ‘ guns to see if there’s anything else I’d like.

I ordered my new in 2016 with no msg disconnect and no safety.

listen.... save your money and buy a good quality firearm used off of ee. you will regret buying junk later on and won't be able to sell it. good quality firearms hold their value. price is long forgotten while quality Is not.

I'd say used M&P, PPX or Canik TP9.

The SD9VE is rough out of the box, and even the Apex kit only makes it slightly better. Norcs are... well, Norcs. You MIGHT get a decent one, you MIGHT get a POS.

PPX with 4 mags for $450 on the EE

I recently got a NP29 9mm. Great gun, zero issues in about 500 rounds. Buddy of mine has a M&P, nice gun too. Too much plastic for me on the M&Ps.
