Well, how'd I do? Picked up a 35 Whelen built on a P17 Enfield action a couple days back, supposedly put together sometime around the late 70's. Judging from the condition and the red fuzz it spent a heckuva lot more time in an old rifle case than hunting or shooting. Fairly decent piece of walnut and machine work on the action, the barrel has a nicely recessed crown and it still seems to have the military mag well as it holds six in the magazine. Seven rounds of .358 should do ok for bear defense ;).

All in all I'm pretty happy, hopefully she shoots.

Nice rig ! I really like the stock design . An Enfield in 35 Whelen , definitely a reliable stopping rifle , as long as it shoots , I hope it does ............ then you can sell it to me lol

That is a nice rig! The work on it seems to be really well done.

I like when the trigger guard is straightened on these like yours has been. They look so much nicer that way.

Well, the stars finally aligned and I got some baby free time when it wasn't pouring rain over the last few weeks to run some Remington Core Lokt through this beast. Took long enough, but I guess a newborn will do that to a guy. I had a few moments to get it on the paper at 100 yards about two weeks back, and yesterday I managed to get it zeroed in time for deer season and put about thirty rounds through it. The 250 gr has a nice push to it, surprisingly more pleasant to shoot than my former 300 win mag despite the much heavier bullet. Once I got settled in and used to the ever so slightly too heavy trigger (gonna need to tweak that) it looks like this girl is capable of around a three inch group at a 200 yard zero. Not too shabby for Remington factory ammo. Now that I have some empty brass we can hopefully put those Speer Hot Cores I picked up to good use. Buddy's dad used to shoot a Whelen, he's gifting me his dies and the expander to make brass from 30-06 fodder once he figures out where they are in his shop. Thank goodness for that, the only Whelen brass I've been able to find local was $100 per 50. No way I'm paying that....

Nice looking rifle. If it were mine, the one thing I'd change is I'd switch to 2 piece redfield/leupold bases in lieu of the one-piece. I've very much not a fan of one-piece bases on these amuser-style actions. Totally un-neccessary weight and obstructs access to the inside of the action.

That stock is reminiscent of an older Fajen style - I'd bet that's where the semi-inletted stock came from. Nicely put together and better made than most more modern guns.

It's some sort of old Browning mount with a sort of cam screw to lock the rings in place. I haven't gotten around to I.D.ing exactly what it's supposed to fit, it'd be nice to have the option to put different rings on if need be. I had a peek around and it seems like these went out of style some time ago and replacements may be unobtanium. I should measure the distance between the mounting screws and see if I can find appropriate Weaver bases to fit I suppose. After hunting season ends I suppose...

I would not use Weaver on that rifle. Use Leupold adjustable bases - given it was drilled and tapped outside a factory, you may need the windage adjustment to zero your scope ;)

Nice looking rifle and in an awesome caliber.
If you need some whelen brass, shoot me a pm, I can spare some.

The Browning bases were just Redfield rebranded mounts IIRC. It looks later than the 70s, but either way probably the nicest P14/17 I have seen in a long time. Beautiful rifle. No British markings on it by chance are there?

That's a really nice rifle Kennymo, its much nicer than my Remington Mod. 30 Express in 35 Whelen.
Your rifle has much nicer wood and the bolt handle looks much better than mine..
Thanks for sharing the great pics..

Nice rifle. Did you pick that up off the EE or locally? (I see you first posted it in June)

I hear those P-17 make great accurate conversions.

Snagged it from the local Cabelas gun library, wound up taking my Stevens 200 on a near even trade with a gift card promotion they had going on. The Stevens was dead stock except for the Rifle Basix trigger I'd installed. Great deal I figured....
