First revolver (sentimental reasons)

Consensus on the 686 - 6 or 7 shot?? Thanks to everyone that has replied, I have found a few now for sale :)

I have heard of trouble with the new 10 shot revolvers, indexing trouble. I would just buy the 6 shot. I would also recommend the 6 inch bbl. I have 4 5/8 to 7.5 inch and I like the 6 inch. If your using a holster than the shorter one is maybe better for a fast draw. The shorter ones have a bigger muzzle blast and I suppose more noise but that is wasted energy actually.

It makes no difference they are both good, with no issues. As some stated earlier the speed loaders are cheaper and easier to get but other then that they are mainly the same. It is whatever you like that matters and not what we like.

I have numerous ones in 5 shot, 6 shot and 7 shot, heck I even have 8 shot wheel guns and for me to target shoot it makes no difference at all. Buy the one you like and take it to range often and shoot it lots and have fun with it and every time you take it out think about your Dad.

I am sorry for your loss. What a nice gesture from your Mum. Treasure what ever you purchase. I know you said vented barrel but take a look at a S&W 686 (stainless, 6") Also a Ruger GP100. Both in the same gun type and the Ruger a bit less $$. Can't go wrong with either. Both in your price range.

I bought the 7 shot, why not.
I wanted the 6 inch barrel version, just for the looks. I did not want a shorter barrel revolver. I am more into pistols and rifles, but I wanted one SS S&W 357 6 inch revolver, just because now "I have one". Eh.

I agree with Kryogen. If you're just plinking makes little difference if you get the 6 or 7-shot. Personally, the 6-shot is more classic IMO.
I like my semi-auto pistols too....I just hate dealing with brass flying and mags :)

Yeah I like autos, but also like revolvers and don't have to chase my brass all over the place.

If I was buying a S&W my personal preference would be 6 shot, just because that's the original configuration for a .357 Magnum.

I love my autos too. This will be my first revolver. My local store has one S&W 686 6" 6 shot left (and thanks to all that have made recommendations on where to buy). I haven't been able to make it down there yet (was going to go today but it was snowing). If it was meant to be it will still be there I guess :)

If the gun your looking at is stainless satin finish I would go for the polished finish. After something rubs the satin finish it becomes somewhat polished and the rest of the finish looks bad. Shiny parts and not shiny parts. This would be a plus for the blued finish over the satin stainless IMHO. The S&W, or some of them, have sort of etched labels and if you were to polish the finish this may not survive? Just something to think about on a cold snowy day.

the 686 WAS 899 (i am sure they would knock off a few bucks for me tho, always get at least 7-15% off from my local). They sold it the day before i got there :( It was a polished SS. I am now re-considering online, but no option to negotiate prices (unless you guys know what sponsors will neg via email?).

(geologist, my understanding is that Taurus has poor aftermarket support in CAN)

I understand that parts and service for Taurus have improved immensely since Freedom Ventures because the importer/distributor. But the issue of how often the guns require warranty work still exists. It seems that if you get a good one or once warranty work is done that they are solid enough for the long term. But it just seems like there are too many new guns that need to go back to intrest me. That and the one person I got to talk with that had bought a Model 93 rimfire revolver returned it before he shot it because the trigger pull was horrendous.

The thing is that there are enough good S&W's and Rugers to go around. So it's just not worth the risk to me to go with Taurus. And I certainly would not buy one sight unseen and without being able to try dry firing it to check out the trigger feel.

But this is coming from a S&W snob .... :D

Thanks Max. I will need to sign up for the EE section and check it out. I also have some other solutions that some kind members have directed me to. I have emailed the store and just waiting for a response (they dont have an online shopping cart?).

It'll take a few days to be approved for the EE section, so I'll post the provided photo.

As you can see, the finish is worn to the bare metal on muzzle and frame, and is spotty along the barrel, so you will need to strip the entire finish and reblue everything, or have a gunsmith do it.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I ordered this today in memory of my dad:
