First SKS. Chinese or Russian

I am looking to purachese my first SKS. Should I go for the Norinco version sold by Marstar which is unissued or the russian ones?

Chinse ones are supposedly new, whereas russian are used/refurbished with various degrees of quality at different vendors.

Your advice is much appreciated.
 
I just bought a brand new Chinese Military one. It is mint. I really like it. The Chinese ones have a chrome lined barrel. They are nice,but the wood isn't as pretty. I got mine at an Edmonton retailer.

But my $0.02 about the Norinco SKS..

Thing is flawless.. Shot 900+ rounds without a problem in mine. In under 2 hours..... :p

I just got one of the "Select" grade SKS's, and all parts match, and the stock is in very good shape. Metal has some dings and scratches, but nothing I haven't seen on every other SKS.

They only have a few sks's left, but they do have lots of other stuff that I am interested in as well....
 
Trade ex is a great place to buy from.

I would go with the chinese one personally.

They are brand new and you cannot beat the deal marstar has right now.
 
A lot of guys are recommending the chinese sks. I had one once, bought it used. It had the unnerving tendency of going full auto. Yes i cleaned the firing pin. Yes i cleaned the bolt. Another thing, i was out shooting it once, reloaded, went to chamber a round, and cut myself on the charging handle. Turns out It had fragmented, spat off a chunk of steel, and was sharp as sh1t!

Now it wasn't brand new, and i dont know what type of chinese it was, but personally, ill never go with anythong but russians. I've had a few, and if you look em over at the shop real good, they run flawlessly.
 
Never buy Chinese anything made in china. In a canadian or American factory if the quality is poor they chuck them. The Chinese don't care and I have seen some real junk made in china. If you can go in the store and look them over then fine you might find a good Chinese SKS. Don't buy a rifle made in china through the mail. Just my opinion you might get lucky.

Or some company will still sell there products even though its poor or fails QC. And honestly certain models from China I hold in higher regards than some economical stuff produced by other countries at or a little higher price point.
As per all company's there are exceptions to the rule.

Before going on this pointless rant you might want to reread the title of this thread.

The options are Chines or Russian, and we are talking about an SKS.

In most cases even the Russian models have visible machining marks, and overall less than stellar workmanship. That is what an SKS is!

Talking about Americna and Canadian factories serves no purpose here......

The marstar deal is not much of a deal after shipping.

I got my SKS from Tradex, for $240 shipped, and my crate of ammo for $260 shipped from Wolverine. The Marstar deal would have cost close to the same after shipping. I think around $480 after tax and shipping.

Instead of a chinese SKS which I have seen plenty of crappy examples of, with terrible wood stocks, I got an unissued, or at least non refurb #'s matching russian sks.

It has a couple dings and finish wear but it is about as nice an sks as I have seen forr $200.
