[/IMG]I attempted my first drill and tap on a p-14 (1917) action. I asked for advise here and got a huge amount of info from you guys and even got to borrow a drill jig from a member here. I want to thank all of you for your advise and help.

Cool, how much? I've got one or two that need to be drilled, got a P-14 sitting at shooters edge for two or three months when they said about two weeks to do, and a P-17 in the closet that I should check if it has been drilled.

Looks good man! Glad you made use of that jig, because it was just sitting on a shelf at my place!

Thanks for letting me use it dude, sorry it took so long to get the drill bits. I had to order a second set because the first set wouldn't even touch the metal on the receiver, to hard to drill. I got a set of cobalt bits and even then it was hard to drill, had to be real patient. Even broke one tap because the metal is so hard and them taps are not cheap.

So what's your address, so I can send mine over :) just kidding, but nice job!! It feels very rewarding when you do a job yourself and it turns out great!!
Cheers
Brian

Right on...successfully ruined a piece of history.

LOL...just kidding, I wanted to be the first jump in with a "you suck cause you bubbaed a worthless milsurp post" haha

Good job, looks nice and straight.

HA, thanks. I was a little nervus and did break a tap but still went good.
Also, I think that rifle was a factory sporter done by SEARS. I don't think it ever saw action in the war.

It is highly probable that it saw service in WWI, WWII, or both. Was in service to earn the * marks on the receiver and barrel.

did you try to temper it using red hot rods set into the hole?

The reason it was so hard is given away by the ERA on the action, it is made by Eddystone which had bad heat treatment problems in their actions. They are the least desirable manufacturer for the Pattern 14/ model 1917 actions. Winchester and Remington manufactured rifles are much softer steel.
