First time out with new 686

Took my new 686 out for the first time yesterday. Sorry, I didn't take pictures!

First two cylinders I shot at 25 meters from a rest to see where it was shooting. It shot about 6" low and 6" left but in a fairly decent for me 3" group. I adjusted the rear sight and needed to adjust the sight pretty well all the way to the right (sight blade is just past the right edge of the sight base). The gun now shoots on center but it seems weird that the sights would need to be adjusted that far in order to shoot to POA.

Has anyone else seen this before? Could it be my grip that is causing it to shoot that far off? The groups I was getting were acceptable but it bothers me a bit that I had to adjust the sight that far. The barrel seems aligned properly and not at all like some of the pictures I have seen of other misaligned barrels on the net.

I was shooting AE 158 gr JSP loads in .357 MAG.
 
25m is quite a long way to start with. Any way you could try from a little closer and maybe do some free hand shooting to see where they land when you shoot it?

6'' is a ways off but it may just be the angle it is resting at.

I find bench resting HG's troublesome to get repeatable groups unless you use something like a ransom.
 
When I shot from 10-15 Meters I was still low left until I adjusted the sights the way they currently sit. I had to raise the rear sight quite a bit to get the shots to land where I wanted them. This was off hand shooting at the closer distance.
 
Do you have a lot of trigger time on a DA Revolver?

Low'n'Left is usually milking the trigger or flinch related.

357's pretty snappy stuff maybe try some .38spl first?
 
I didn't find my 6" SS 686 to have any more recoil than a 9mm, with 357 loads. The revolver is twice the weight. Watch my vid up there, not much muzzle jump.
 
This is my first DA revolver, I was shooting in single action for the groups. My next step was to try some 38 spcl next time out to see if it makes any difference. I have shot other hand guns a fair bit but this is my first go with a DA. This is a 4.2" model.
 
Note that revolvers pretty much require a different hold and trigger finger placement than semis. You want the trigger to rest in the folds of your last finger joint rather than out towards the pad on the tip like with many semis.

Also get your grip up high on the back strap so .... ah nuts... just remembered that the pro is back online with his videos. Just make sure you're doing it the way he says and shows. They don't come any better than this.

If you're doing it all this way and it's still got the sights way off then maybe let someone else who's a good revolver guy try it. If it's STILL way off then it may be that the gun is put together a bit wonky and it should go back. There's simply no way that you should need the sights pulled off way to the side like you're saying.
 
Physics, eh. Not much difference at all. 1st #, Weight of gun, 2nd is Recoil in FT/lbs, 3rd is Speed of recoil F/S. I would characterize it as slightly more recoil, less quick, less felt for me anyway. I was shooting with one hand and it was cool as hell, 158g 357 hot loads.

Thanks, In my mind I was doing that, LOL! I will try to pay more attention to the grip, etc next time out. Thanks again.

Where ya copy and paste that from lol.

Ive shot tonnes of 9mm and tonnes of 357 and i find a big difference between the two in recoil. Try shooting your 9 sometime and the shoot some 357 right after, it may put it in better prespective.

Chuck Hawks Recoil Table and I did^. Not much difference when you consider my 6" SS 686 is almost 2x the weight as any of my 9mm's. Maybe you're shooting a snubnose. A snubnose 38spcl has pretty good recoil. I didn't feel much difference at all.

Look at my vid, not much muzzle jump at all, with big flames!

4.2 inch 686 and its a huge diff between 38 and 357,could be the shorter barrel i dunno, its a boomer for sure. Im shooting pmc 158g 357. FSP.
 
Yes. Less weight and a different center of balance. There's the difference. My 6" weighs a ton and is a pleasure to shoot. Totally different animal.
 
Those don't look to be real stout loads in that vid. Lots of flash but thats easy to come by. Were they reloads or factory? Look more like 38+. I know I can sure tell the difference between full power .357 mag loads and full power 9mm loads. BIG TIME!!

Im shooting factory ammo, as i don reload. I cant see an extra two inchs making that much difference. However , everybody does experience recoil differently. I can certainly tell the difference between 357 and 9mm big time. It looks like 357 to me in the video, .38special to me is even less recoil then 9mm.
 
They were reloaded 357 mag that I bought at the store, 158g. Was told they were pretty hot. I have some factory 357 JHP that I haven't shot yet. Will try and see if there is a difference. Factory 38 special had about 20% of the recoil and muzzle flash.
 
Great, I would like to know if you can tell the difference. I know I reload some .357's for a friend, but i dumm them down a little just because it makes them more fun to shoot. Were the ones in the vid 158 gr lead semi wad cutter? If so, then you really don't want to smoking down your barrel over about 1000fps or you will start to get some serious leading. Maybe if they were hard cast and gas check'd but who knows. What did it say on the box?

Lets see how the factory loads feel, id be interested in knowing how they feel to you.
