My wife and I decided to try shooting slugs on the weekend. I knew there would be more "kick" with the slugs, but I was surprised how much more there was. I watched my wife, and it pushed her back a foot!

It was fun though...

They are not too bad if you are only firing a few; I was shooting 50-60 per range visit. That many made me do two things; I bought a reloading press, and I put a Knoxx Spec Ops stock on my Mossberg to absorbe some of the recoil :).

The felt recoil with slugs from my Mossberg 500 with a Choate top folder stock is not pleasant and I shoot a .375 H&H 20" carbine with no problems. Those aluminum receiver 500's with the tiny Choate shoulder pad are bad news. I have an HP9-1 14" with a Knoxx Specops and even with the standars stock, recoil with slugs was pleasant.

I would say there is a noticable difference between slugs and pellets. I was at the range and brought a bit of both (12 gauge 7 1/2) I had to stop shooting after about 8 slugs. My shoulder hurt so bad :( It normally doesn't hurt after the same amount of regular ol' scatter.

Hehe. I built my dad a Mossberg 500 with a synthetic stock, pistol grip, and 18.5" barrel. We first went through a box of 7.5 target load. It was comfortable with just the pistol grip. So we threw a couple of slugs in and they sure do kick a lot more. Fun though.

I have a Mossburg Maverick 88 pump. Very similar to the 500. Although mine doesn't have a pistol grip. It's a great gun :) Mine is 27' inches, not 18.5'. Cool thing about the 88 is it can hold both the 3' and 2 3/4' shells.

It used to hurt me something awful, but I guess I learned to deal with it, nowadays shooting 20-30 slugs in a single sitting won't even leave me with a bruise.

Hahahahaha, I remember the first time that I fired slugs outa my maveric 88 just after I bought it. The 18.5" with slugs ain't to bad but man oh man the 28" bbl with a modified choke, ouch, I came so close to busting my shoulder, I remember how deadly accurate it was with that set up and that I hit a piece of 1 1/2" angle iron sticking out of the ground 50yrd away, almost cut it in half, I also remember dropping to my knees it hurt so friggin much:kickInTheNuts:.
Of coarse now I have put on a new recoil pad on the crazy 88.
I dunno I must have pulled the shot gun off my shoulder just before I pulled the trigger:runaway:

I pulled a similar prank on a buddy of mine the last time we went out shooting. The first 5 rounds were regular birdshot loads after those were gone, the next 5 shells I handed him were slugs (unknown to him). The first round shoved him back pretty good and he gave me a "wtf ???" kind of look, I just shrugged and told him "slugs" ... He proceeded to fire the next 4 rounds but forgot to count and pulled the trigger on an empty chamber for #6, holy flinch Batman ! I have it on video, we all had a good laugh at his expense when we watched the video at home ... That flinch shouldn't be very hard to fix, as he realized that it didn't really "hurt", it's just not what he's used to.

That was exactly it, we put a few target load ahead of the slugs. bang bang bang BOOM!

It was pretty funny, we both busted a gut!

Recoil

Some police training groups limit 12 slugs a day . Ever get a headache after shooting a batch of slugs ? -Thats caused by the brain bouncing in the skull.
Extra heavy recoil has also been known to dislocate the retina - so hold those shotties TIGHT to your shoulders ! :shotgun: :runaway:

Is there much difference in recoil between 1 oz and 1 1/4 oz slugs?

When people hold the shotgun 'tight' to your shoulder ....are you pulling back mostly with the right (ie trigger) hand or left hand ?

Any other techniques for managing recoil?

How do you stop from getting slapped in the face by the stock ?

Thanks

Actually, it's the other way around, get a good cheek weld and the gun will move with you, if you hold it away from your face it may move sideways during recoil and slap you .... Also watch where you put your hand, most importantly your thumb, I've puched myself many times in the nose under recoil until I figured it out.

He he, I've done that before with some heavy loads in the old maverick.

We were shooting a few clays last year and I brought along a few 3" slugs. One of the boys wanted to try one in his old mans Cooey. It just about knocked him on his arse! lol. The slow-mo video is priceless.
