First You Get Fast... Then You Get Good!

I find it hard to believe a single dog could run a deer till exhaustion unless it's a pregnant doe in the spring.
I did one time watch a young buck stand panting taking a break from a chase while two beagle stood 50' away also panting & catching their breath :)

WOW it is amazing how easy it is to get some of you guys going...

Ya some of your assinine statements will do that to some

Your inplication is your trying to... "get some of you going"
Perhaps since you have admited you are basically trolling the mods should have dealt with you??

We were talking about running and follow up shots and how to practice for the possibility of such.
I just adjusted the cast on my Benelli R-1 and it is amazing what a difference a properly fitted rifle makes for aquisition time!
I am going to the pound this afternoon to pick up some targets.:p

It's the air. With the population and industry in the east no wonder your dogs have no wind. Their lungs have been burned out by the pollution. Probably the poor buggers couldn't cross the street without having a rest to catch their breath.

I see your from southwestern BC!
Kinda like the pot calling the kettle black isn't it??? :D

Not amazing to some of us.
If you have time you can shoot any rifle well...if you don't...the rifle must fit well!

I know you'll love me for this ;) & as much as I too don't care for Rem auto's or pumps, they are one of the best fitting rifles (for me) for fast aquisition of targets! & NO I don't own one :D

i hate to brag, but my brother and i have always been good at running shots with very little practice, no idea why.
for rapid shooting practice, one lad turns his back, the other lad sets hockey pucks in random places at the backstop. when its clear turn and open fire! after that reset the pucks and make him run for a bit before getting to his gun. shooting with the heart beating fast is good practice just in case the buck fever strikes!

South Western BC is 1/4 of our province the only smog in this vast area is in the Fraser Valley (Vancouver area) and it is only a fraction of what you fellows in Ontario have...

WOW it is amazing how easy it is to get some of you guys going...
my comment and I'll not only stand by it I'll proud of it...

Bwaaah Haaa Haaa... :D :dancingbanana:

If I am guilty Ban me... Ban me... :ban:

OK OK I'm sorry I don't know what came over me it must be the heat I'll get back on track...

Senior I agree totally with your comments on the Rem 7600/7400...
A buddy of mine has a 7600 in 270 Win and I have a 7400 Carbine in 30-06...
These are both extremely fast guns to work with...

I use the 7400 in heavy cover where most shooting is max around 100 yards and usually loaded with Hornady 220gr round nose...

Calum, you need to think about the vast area of BC and not in the foothills of a populated area, were some of the comments are coming from, I can shoot a moose 5 minutes out my back door, we see dogs running game here we know its not hounds on a deer or cat! it comes down to the same thing as a running shot "COMMON SENCE".
I would never shoot at a dog in another area I didnt know or know 99.9% of the people there, here I can say yea its a pack of rez dogs (this is also a winter problem here, ice comes in and allows them access to the hills across the lakes)

anyhow asking myself how many animals in the years of guiding and hunting for myself and friends did we need to shoot a running animal, in all honesty I can think of 5 times , 3 of which were bears heading for willow patches (were I didnt want to have to look for them)
I can see that some areas were pushing game its common to shoot running shots, I couldnt see myself doing it especialy with a semi auto, I would be to buisy laffing at myself thinking john rambo woulda been proud (thats just the way my opinion on myself rolls with that style of hunting nothing against the guys that do it atall! )
in the end the point here was practicing for that shot wether its a regulat ocurance or just sh^t gone wrong and anyone who says practice is a foolish or stoopid needs to be investigated by Penn & Teller cause there 100% full of BULLSH^T ! ;):D:D

Haha, it takes some making up on a thread for a few guys to admit that a 7400-7600 aint a bad gun...
Im marking this on my calendar:):):):)

C'mon Bones
I'll give you a scenario to explain why the semi auto is held so deer(err dear) out here.
Think of the adrenaline of sitting on your ass listening to hounds get closer, and closer, and closer... listening for crunches in the bush, hoping for a shot. Than the hounds are getting close as hell, and a big deer busts out the bush 100 yards away from you and is coming right at you through thick brush at a full gallop. you can only see glances of it through the trees and he's not 50 yards away... A bit of adrenaline???
He realizes that your there at about 20 yards and tries to break left through a little opening and passing not 10 yards away.
you have a basketball sized target to hit going 15-20 MPH...
Would you like one well placed opportunity, or one well placed opportunity, with a very quick second in the event there was 2 deer, or your deer gets up?... a well tuned semi gets this edge every time. (kep in mind we're party hunting)

This question is answered by the countless numbers of deer taken this way every year, and is a huge part of what makes this type of hunt very very interesting...
For anyone who hunts turkey, you know exactly what Im talking about. Nothing gets you going like a gobbling turkey coming your way... you can hear him getting closer... closer... closer.
by the time he's in front of you, your pumped. The dogs do the same thing for nearly everyone who hunts with them.
I bet you if you tried it even once with success, your opinion would change...
Its a different adrenalne rush when you hear a dog tongueing and its coming at you.

I dont know any good houndsmen personally anymore, and I miss that hunt. The last few times we've had deer infront of dogs was purely by accident, and the hounds(from another group of hunters) ran the deer out of their bush a bit away. we could hear em coming from a mile away.

Wrong!!!
It doesn't even matter if they come to you, just listening to the squeals of beagal or two on a chase brings smiles to my face:)
It's also good to make you forget about your half frozen toes sittin on a watch!

Very interesting the difference in hunting between east and west. Given that same scenario out west many of us would let the deer go by and be waiting for the dogs.

OK I have never admited to liking the jerk-0-matic or its cousin the battery operated stroke-0-matic, and no I wouldnt be all hyper with a semi, Im much smarter than that and know a lever is just as good and less failure rates! as for the dogs I dunno never done it, but I can tell you its hard to beat the adrenaline rush of sitting in a cutblock calling moose and all of a sudden 20 yards away a big bull snorts back at you and you never heard him coming ;)

Or a porcupine advancing at you with its steely eye just waiting for the right moment to launch his quills at you! And if you get hit by one (or more), they travel up your blood stream to your heart and kill you.

This is true, I read it on Gun Nutz.

This message brought to you by the Canadian Registered Association of Porcupines. Or CRAP for short. :D
