I'm sure the question has been asked but...... What are a few good quality ($500-1000) fixed 6x or 8x scopes? I'd prefer a 30mm tube, and target turrets.

Primarily it will be a coyote hunting rig with a smaller range shooting application. It will be going on a .222 rem build that I'm doing now.

Tube size has no effect on light gathering ability. All other things being equal, objective lens size does....to a point.

1" vs 30mm doesn't actually affect your light gathering power, as that's entirely dependent on the primary objective.

of course, there are some caveat's to that rule...but essentially it's a non-issue.

I highly suspect that 30mm scopes were made simply to make it appear like rifle scope technology was advancing...when we've essentially hit the wall with what optic's can achieve.

30mm tubes do serve a function and have been around forever but they are becoming more popular in North America now with the popularity of long-range shooting....they allow for larger internal mechanics that permit more MOA adjustment. We are also seeing the increased room inside used to increase the amount of zoom range. At one point 3x was maximum but that has been pushed to 6.5x in the Busnell 6500. Some companies like Zeiss and Swaro have gone to longer tubes to gain the extra room required for 5x zoom range in a 1" tube but to gain MOA adjustment or zoom range, you need more room inside.

a 30 mm tube is stiffer also. i kike a 30 mm tube now that lenses are bigger than the old days there is no reason to squish the tube down to 1 inch. also the rings have more gripping surface and less pressure for the same hold i dont know why its not all 30 mm it would only make sense

I'm not sure if there is enough gain with regards to ring contact and stiffness to justify the additional weight and bulk. With quality rings, 1" scopes seem to hold zero quite well.

I bought my first scope that has a 30mm tube about ten years ago because I liked the uncommon reticle (German No.4) and the price was right. I haven't bought my second yet. Finding rings for it back then was a bit of a pain. I still use it and like it but not for the 30mm tube which cannot be seen to have done anything for my shooting that my one inch tube scopes don't.

10x I think would be over the top. Most of the reading I've done says that the 10x was created for 250 to a 1000 yard shooting. My .222 isn't gonna be reaching for a 1000 anytime and as a coyote rig most of my shot will be in the 100 to 300 range. I am starting to reconsider my choice cause for the same price as the Leupold 6x comp/hunter, once I add the external knobs and BDC redical through Korth's, I'd be looking at about the same price as the Vortex PST FFP 4x10-50. Needless to say a FFP scope for a grand is a sweet price and Vortex's reviews have been pretty good as of late.

Comparing the Leupold to a vortex.Well ,you will see.

Why would you want external turrets and a BDC reticle?

Ditto... if your maximum range is 300, just zero for 250, and hold a little bit higher at 300. Bullet drop would likely be 4-6" at 300 with a 250 yd zero.

I was kind of getting at why the OP wanted both...I get having one or the other for his described use.....just not both. But ya if he has no intent of shooting over 300 yards, not much reason for either.
