I'm thinking about building an old-fashioned tinder lighter, common 2-300 years ago. For those not familiar with them, they were in essence small flintlock pistols minus the barrel, but with the addition of a tray or box under the frizzen. Tinder was placed in the box and firing the device showered sparks down onto it - much more convenient than, say, a manual flint and steel set.

The best ones used to be made with box locks. Not being too aware of the state of the muzzle-loader world, can anyone recommend a source or dealer for small box lock pistol? Not wanting to alter an antique, a reproduction would be ideal, provided that the lock actually works. I have a 12(6) ticket, if that matters. It wouldn't stay a firearm in any case.

Thanks.

Yeah, I guess. Hadn't thought of it that way, lol.

Here's a photo of an old one. Handsome in their own way.

I suppose that you could buy a lock, trigger, and guard parts from Track of the Wolf and build a non-boxlock version. There must have been earlier gunsmith designs before the purpose-built commercial versions.

That's sort of my fallback. Thanks.

Dixie Gun Works sells exactly what you want (http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product...5fumoit360qds0) However, they do not ship this item to Canada (at least the last time I asked them)

If you find parts to recreate this, please let me know. I'd love to have one of these powder testers too (http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product...ducts_id=17354). But alas, they don't ship them neither

Excellent, many thanks! I will have to confirm with the Gun Cops whether or not these are considered firearms under federal legislation. If not, I visit the relatives in Excited States from time to time and I could order them shipped there and declare them at the border on my way back. I will let you know.

Beat me to it :) Years ago they would ship these to Canada - that's where I bought mine.
