Flooding in Muskoka, Haliburton, and CKL Ontario

Every log is out of the dam in Fenelon. They are now worried about flooding down stream. I heard a figure of 237 cubic meters of water per second are coming out of Cameron Lake

On my drive around the flood areas I saw a lot of homes built in spots that you just shake your head. What were they thinking?

Take a look at River cove dr. in Huntsville? People thought "HEY! Cheap waterfront property" then built 6O+ homes on the flood plane of the Big East R.
Worst thing is that they didn't even build on stilts, and if the spring floods don't get you then the constantly changing river path will. I believe that at least one person has come home after the spring floods to find the river is now where their home was.
Consequently they can no longer get home insurance.

Problem is that the economy in Muskoka has all but colapsed. Insurance will pay for some but the remainder will suffer.
Building contractors ans service master will be busy for awhile though.

This Photo hurts the most...... both the beer store and the Liquer store flooded.

Made the mistake of ordering regular fish and chips there once. Now I order one piece of fish and half fries, and share the half fries. Still lots. They do a really good job of fish and chips. The Dominion Hotel has great burgers; the one with blue cheese is outstanding. Another excellent area restaurant is the Pepper Mill north on 35 toward Carnarvon.

Snow coverage this year was less than the previous several years, but spring was late, and then everything went fast. That torrential rain didn't help. Remember when Minden got 121cm from one December blizzard? Even that winter flooding was not a major issue. We only got 63cm in Haliburton from that storm. I'm in Dysart.
Cleared the lane 25 times that winter, only 15 this past one.

Your wife has a great restaurant!

I love how the majority of the concern focuses on the beer store/lcbo. I picture houses being washed down river while the entire community rallies around to sand bag the beer store! :D

We have a flood plain in our area where the river cuts across when it gets high. Last serious spring flood a guy puts his house on the market and it sold while the sand bags were still in place. Go figure????

Probably not allowed but...a huge shoutout for Dan Garbutt and his drivers from Highlands Towing in Minden (no personal interest) who were removing vehicles from harms way FOR FREE !! Who knows how many other firms and volunteers were there when needed. We might be small towns but no shortage of stand up folks !

Looking like this weekends trip to camp will also be off. Wondering if our ATV bridges may have drifted off down stream. For those familiar with Minden, the house in the foreground is the Monk Family Funeral Home residence. North of the bridge on Bobcaygeon road.
