BANCROFT - Bancroft Mayor Bernice Jenkins held a special meeting with the press April 23 to put to rest some of the rumours floating around town regarding the flooding.
Some had been speculating that the high falls dam was about to break.
That, she said, was untrue.

She had also heard the sewer system in the town of Bancroft was compromised.
Another falsehood, she said.
“When the river is running down through town in a regular way there are concerns with public safety. In this situation the river is running high, it’s fast and let me tell you would not last very long if you fell in that river now.”

Jenkins urged residents to use common sense in whether they should evacuate their homes or not while Bancroft is under a state of emergency.
She said the schools were closed during the flooding to ensure children stay safe.
“We bring students to town from all over and many of them haven’t seen the waters yet other than on TV. It is something new and different for them to see, how could we possibly keep the children away when we cannot keep the adults away from the waters,” Jenkins said.
She noted that evacuation is still voluntary, however, there is a shelter set up at the arena if anyone needs a place to stay.

April 22, 2013 - The Township of Minden Hills declared a State of Emergency on Saturday, April 20, 2013 due to extreme flooding. Archie Stouffer Elementary School is closed on Monday April 22 and Tuesday April 23. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Township of Minden Hills are advising motorists that Bobcaygeon Road is closed at Invergordon Avenue, and Water Street is closed from Prince Street to the Canadian Tire entrance due to rising water levels. The OPP are asking for the public's assistance and patience during these closures. The public is also reminded that driving a motor vehicle on closed roads is prohibited and subject to enforcement. Penalties include a $110 fine and 3 demerit points. The OPP is urging people to stay away from the downtown Minden area, specifically the Gull River, for reasons of public safety.
For up-to-date information about road closures and flood information, please go to the County of Haliburton website at www.haliburtoncounty.ca. If you be in an emergency situation requiring Police, Fire or Ambulance, call 911. If you require additional, non-urgent, information, contact the Township of Minden Hills at (866) 856-3247.

Latest word is that there is fear that the Hawk lake dam could fail. I can't confirm if that's based on science, or the fact that it's overwhelmed with the flood water and scaring people. If it were to fail, much of downtown Minden would be flushed out into Twelve mile lake.

Man, seeing the photos of Minden sure evokes memories. I had a good buddy who used to live several houses away from the LCBO. Spent a lot of time fishing and hunting the area, using his place as a base.

I sure hope the flood waters recede without much further damage.

Went past the dam above Minden today. The water is over the banks, reaching toward the highway, above the dam.
