In the 60's when I was in the army our basic armament was the FN C1 rifle. I am curious whether these were ever available as surplus and whether they would be restricted or prohibited. If they are available I assume the pinned mag rule would apply.

I don't think any military ones were sold as surplus. The OPP ones went to England and some came back.

I bought mine new from the Longbranch arsenal. came with mags in sealed plastic, bayo and grenade launcher.

Man, I'm so green with envy right now.

Wish I didn't miss the FAL boat... :(

I dont have a Canadian made one, but I did get an Indian Ishapore 1A1 long before they went prohibited.
Now the feds wont even issue a permit to transport it to the range, so it sits unused in my room.

Ganderite: I'm jogging my memory...seems to me, without looking up the reference material, that you would have paid about
$225.00 for that rifle, at that time.

Yes/No?

The Ishy that I paid $126.00 for back in 1991 ( only worth $186.00 today according to the CPI) really was a POS.

Very poor workmanship by a then third world country who stole the pattern and subsequently paid FAL no royalties.

I got the thing deactivated and it now is an accessory in the rifle rack of my 1971 M38A1CDN3.

A PROVINCIAL COURT DECISION only, and I don't recall the actual Verdict....

... Well, some Australian ones were sold in Canada ( Lever Arms at least, comes to mind) They were if memory serves, ex Singapore Police.(?) And a number of Belgium Made FALs were sold also. Ex Israeli I think. ...... As to the Conversion to Full Auto, and again, I have rely on Memory, there was one Court Case ( Burnaby Provincial Court in 1978/79 or thereabouts ) where Judge Groberman,Ruled that it was NOT all that easy or readily achieved, with the KEY PART being the Safety Sear. And that was neither readily available, nor easily manufactured. In reality, all it would have taken, was to have the Safety Sear slot welded closed. IE Tightening the Import/Sale Regulations. Now, whether it still would have been capable of Automatic Fire without the "Safety Sear", frankly, I've no idea. ..... David K

Had an L1A1, and a safety sear. wish I had put it back in, as a reload fired out of battery wrecking the thing. I used to hunt with it before it went restricted/prohib

I think I would be more worried about a semi-auto FAL than a full auto one... But I can see why it is a prohib, as it is so much more dangerous than an M1A, or an M305..

Just a tease

Yes, the FN's that came in had the bolt carrier ground as some moron thought it was to enable full auto. It was in fact, a safety feature engaged by the bolt carrier to prevent out of battery firing.
