Considering Canada's restrictive gun laws we can get some pretty cool semi-automatic military type rifles here like the CZ-858, AR-15's etc.... But I've never seen the old FN C1A1 we used to use in the forces for sale in Canada. Are they prohibited?

They have been prohibited for a few years now. Unless you have a 12(5) OIC# 13 :dancingbanana: on the back of your PAL there isn't a much chance of getting one that can actually fire.

I know a few guys with nice FN's... All they're good for now though is collecting dust... :(

Prohib, and very rare. The majority were scrapped after they were replaced with the C7. if I remember the thing I read, they were not prohib yet and would have been surplussed, but the Libs held up their sale so the military lost patience and just scrapped them. I think the only ones that made it as surplus were ones that were sold to the OPP, who sold them off before they were prohibited.

I would love to add a C1A1 to my collection, but unless we can get the FAL removed from the prohib list (along with every other prohib by name firearm) we are SOL.

Mine is ex-O.P.P.

What I was told by other people on this forum was that the OPP surplussed them, originally to a dealer in the U.S. Unfortunately the ATF (BATFE) wouldn't let them in because of the safety/auto sear. Instead they went to the UK (mine has a British Nitro proofmark), and a few were re-imported back into Canada.

There are also a number that were purchased directly by civillians from Canadian Arsenals for target shooting/service rifle competition through affiliation with the DCRA.

The military kept their C1 and C2s along with the C1 SMG. Diameco was contracted to re-furbish/FTR them before they were placed in storage. I suspect this was more to give Diameco more work than anything else.

What I heard was that the storage facility leaked or something, and many of the weapons were damaged. DND did not want to, or did not have the budget to repair the damaged ones and fix the storage facility. There was also an ongoing cost to keep storing them. Since the old concept of war stocks and keeping old weapons for "mobilization" was out of fasion, all the remaining weapons were scrapped, since the government as a matter of policy does not surpluss weapons anymore, anless it is to a government (CF-5 fighters to Botswana, 106 RCL ammo to Mexico etc).

what a dream!

A bit of a nightmare too, since it is agony to "look but don't shoot".

The Canadian Leitz scope was aquired after the prohibition, so I have never used it.

In fact I had just received a British S.U.I.T scope and was planning to take it to the range to try it out the day I got my "Dear Sir, F**k you, no more SAPs, no more range time" letter. Bastards!:(

Makes perfect sense to prohib the FN , much more dangerous than the M14 , you do see the odd (8L series) C1A1 for sale, IIRC there were 200 sold to the OPP and then were sold to the public, but that was many moons ago

These laws make me sick because this was Canada's service rifle for year's.
Also on a side note...
The rumor is Britian is pulling these out of the retirement and re-deploying them Afganistan.
LOL!!!

Awesome pictures guys! Its sad that such an iconic rifle is no longer allowed on the ranges. Iv never had the pleasure of handling one but for those who have, did that super long barrel ever get in the way?
