So I am still trying for my first ever &@%*^# coyote, and after my outing this morning, I have to say I think I am the worst coyote hunter ever! This was my third time out complete with coyote call, ghillie suit and eager anticipation, and I have yet to see a coyote! Dammit!

There we go; rant over.... thank you for listening... :D

You can take Solice in the fact that the next time you are out driving about, you will see a number of Yotes frolicking in the fields, and can kick yourself in the A$$ numerous times for not having your firearm with you!

I wouldn't beat yourself up over it too bad, in summer coyotes have lots of available food, are mostly interested in raising their young and are basically haveing an easy life right now. Concentrate on them when the odds are in your favor - in fall/winter when food is harder to get and they need to eat to live. Calling will work better and things will fall into place.

That about sums it up. :)

pffffft 3 times!?!? WOW you must be HORRIBLE at calling.

lol i think i went 20-30 stands before calling a coyote. Another 10-15 before killing one. Its not easy, we have lots of coyotes around but they are smart coming to a call. They don't run in full blast like you see on tv everytime. New brunswick might be different but summer months are very slow for calling, and half the time you never see them anyways with the high grass and everything. They will come downwind almost everytime, and will circle downwind to catch your wind before showing themselves.

try using turkey decoys and call as loud as you can. I had 6 come in to my decoys this spring. I know it's a different season, but I'm definatly trying it this winter.

Kill em' all! Just be careful coming out of the woods with turkey decoys when it's not turkey season, you my have some explaining to do.

I like the peanut butter, chickens and decoys approach. I should give that a try. We never see many 'yotes because I'm too busy telling jokes in the ground blind. :D

Yes, in Ontario we have many opportunities for 'yotes'. Life is good! For us, just getting out after work and walking the fields with my carry .22-250 is productive for the mental health. ;)

Cheers,
Barney

at my partents acreage whenever i came across a coyote that was getting a lil too freindly (aka within sight) id put out some tuna old crappy meat etc anything that gave off a good stink seemed to attract them, id spread it around a lil so they couldnt just gulp it down, usually it would only take a day or so for one to show up looking for an easy meal
there was very heavy brush/trees and i would put the bait about 100' into the field

They are cagey critters. Right now they are targets of opportunity and not really responsive to calling as the woods are a buffet line right now. Don't give up!

I have called in more dogs during the summer months. My thinking is: the parents are trying to teach the young ones to hunt and looking for any easy meal to let the pups take on themselves. Try hunting cut hayfields half hour before dark.

Wait for the farmers to cut the hay fields, and then hang out there around dusk. The coyotes will come out for the small creatures in the grass and you can light them up.

I agree starting is hard, I tried last jan and feb....... With no luck, although a bald eagle showed up. Yet I did receive some howls in return!!! Everybody says ontario is great for it but not for me -> YET... I will keep trying. Guys in town got 49 last year(I saw the hides)... I am trying to hook up with them to show me the ropes!

Good luck!
