When shooting my FN/FAL, the bolt will no cycle back any more than
a 1/8 inch.Doesn't matter what ammo,gas plug in semi-a positn.
gas rod strit and true. gas port is clean.. I'm stumped.
Was shooting perfectly fine,then this-----Help!!

you may have the gas plug in the off position if it is an L1 or C1 the groove on the plug should be at the top .the gas is shut off to fire grenades

I agree with the gas plug, that would cause it. We had to do that.
Check your gas regulator also. Return spring ok?
Can you #### it properly?

i will assume you know which way to install a gas plug ... you got a leak some where , i would guess its coming out of the area where the gas tube is screwed into the gas block , try putting some grease around that area and firing a shot, if the grease is blown out severely then that is where excessive gas is escaping from. a new gas tube would solve that problem.

ps. for inch FN, when replacing a gas tube , do not screw in too deep bcos you might block gas exit port, you can actually see it thru the port.... good luck.

Assuming you are in Canada, how did you manage to shoot your FN when everyone else keeps theirs as a chunk of paperweight?

There are legal means to do so.

SAP's will not be granted to take rifles to a range to shoot. However. (I have not yet tested this...but the theory sounds OK to me.) However, if you take the gun to a gunsmith to get work done on it, an evaluation, test, repair, valuation for sale, etc, and that gunsmith happens to have a shooting range onsite, I would think that test-firing could be part of the process.

Note, I have not tested that, but it's theoretically one way it could legally be fired.

Alternatively, having a gunshow at a shooting range, and SAP's will be granted for gunshows, well, hey, you're at a range....

I have not tested any of these ideas, and I don't know off the top of my head anywhere that meets the above criteria, but if such a place existed, it might be how this person is shooting his firearm legally.

Is this FAL original or assembled from parts?

A few thoughts off the top of my shallow mind:
Gas plug OK (groove on top)
Gas regulator setting (not venting all the gas out)
Piston jamming on piston spring?
Buttstock recoil spring 'end' not binding?

The last SAP I had to take my FN to a gunshow actually had words on it to the effect that the SAP was not valid for firing the rifle.

As to what might be wrong: I throw out this one, but it's probably a VERY long shot. If you handload, maybe you didn't put enough powder in?

No response so we keep throwing possible answers at you.

Had a similar problem where I had been shooting with the gas block cranked to maximum force when I didn't need it. The piston operating rod began to develope a burr as the end got peened over from slamming into the breech block. It wasn't returning to its starting position properly.

Two seconds with a fine stone to remove the burrs on the end of the op rod and it cycled again.

My FN FAL L1A1 hasn`t been shot since I got a letter stating it could no longer go to a range. Only can take to gunsmith or export. Other than that it pretty much scrap iron now. :( How do you manage to get a SAP to even shoot it anymore?

I had a similar issue with mine years ago - I had the gas tube screwed in to far and it was blocking the gas port - 1/2 turn out and I was back in bussiness

 Still curious how you get to have a technical problem with a rifle that you cant legally discharge in Canada. Am I missing something?

I hope its an honest person with a legitimate situation, but part of me has this idea that its a military person.
My advice...

RTFM.

how would a cadet organization has access to FN? if they had any it would have been taken away and destroyed long time ago.
