Fn fal

I bought my Brit L1A1 for $ 250 from Bob Prestash at Trail Firearms more years ago than I care to remember . It won't be neutered while I'm on this side of the dirt , after I won't care . It's still my favorite post war semi , I miss shooting it .

DON'T NEUTER it , unless it's an Ishapore of course . Why don't you give manufacturer and class it's registered in . Many of us older guys have lots of 12.x on our licence . (12.3 is the worst 'cuz LE can run you through the wringer for years for those transfers .)

Even an Ishapore doesn't deserve to be neutered. Let's hang on to them as long as possible, there's always the Faint Hope clause. :)

I was working at Lever Arms part time when he brought in a 100 L1A1's. We would strip them down and Mr Lever would grind off part of the breach block carrier to prevent full auto function. I don't think I made any money as I took it all in product.

It won't be neutered, this thread has already confirmed my suspicion that the cost of conversion would outweigh a potential sale price.
I'll get some more info and post, Thanks :)

A little more info:

I got one for $250 - Aussie - was in very rough shape but minty bore -- had it refinished and got CF wood for it, sold for $1,200 IIRC, back when 12(5) guns could still go to the range.

I really need to get one down here -- of course I'm awaiting for the FN America version ;)

Yeah, with the cross cuts. The idea was to manage debris better. Most countries didn't bother with the clip loading body cover either. In 12 years, I don't recall ever having used it after basic.

unlike the m-14 which was originally intended to load from stripper clips, i believe the idea was to enable the user to get a shot off from an empty mag quicker via stripper clip, and also to top up a partial mag faster, a "tactical reload" if you will.

This rifle has synthetic hand guards. The Germans used the stg 58 which was built in Austria under license to FN. The stg 58 had steel handguards which had a tendency to get hot. The photo shows the safety select on the 'A' position and probably a 12.3 CA version.

Never seen one without the A position, even my Belgian "Browning" made for the civillian market has it, , selector just won't rotate into that position. Manual claims, Auto fire is not possible with that model. Rifle is stamped 7.62, manual is over printed . 308.

If I remember rightly, they sold for 2 grand, years ago, when they were a non restricted firearm. :(

20 years ago I could have bought an Isreali surplus FAL with the sand grooves in the bolt.. for $199 at Spartic Arms in Concord ONT... I bought a Chinese sks for $250 instead, and boy do I feel like a frign idiot LOL. For 2K it had better be BNIB and gold plated

Roger that. Sounds good on paper. Try it sometime ..... Betcha I can replace the mag a lot faster than you can find a stripper clip and fumble it into the mag against say, 15 rds (if that was legal), or even an empty mag.

Sad thread. I picked up an Aussie FAL for $500. Very nice condition. I had it registered in a buddy's name while I waited for my RPAL to come. I got the RPAL just after the feds prohibited them. At least I got to fire it once. That was what made me distrust any firearms laws and get into studying them as a hobby. As far as I'm concerned I'm still owed one FN-FAL by the government.

You're lucky. I've always wanted to get/try one of the DSA FN's .

The people who tell tales of FALs in the price range of $200-$500 before prohibition were buying well used military surplus rifles. This does not look to me like a well used surplus piece. Firstly, most of the surplus guns were made in UK, Australia, Canada, India or Israel. This one is Belgian. Secondly, this is a type III upper receiver and has a horizontal takedown lever, suggesting manufacture well after the 1955-1970 time frame of most of the surplus guns.

This probably came into Canada as a brand new factory made semi-auto, and may well have cost the original buyer something close to that $2000 mark. Hard to say what it would go for in the current era.

Does it have a cutout for a safety sear? That will tell you if it's factory commercial or military.
