FOC creditcard fraud?

What a shame. Needed to order some ammo since the province I’m in has next to nothing for pistol ammo.

Anyone have any problems ordering from Cabela’s? I figure a company like that won’t have any issues…

Cabelas (and Shipping company) lost a safe I ordered lol. I don’t like giving them money unless it’s a last resort. They do price match and offer free shipping codes.

Well well well, just got a new Visa card and through the activation process they found a small charge to a doctor in the USA against the card that they wanted to confirm (which I had not used). This is the same card I used back in mid July to make a purchase from FOC when I was waiting for my other mastercard was also compromised (although I am not sure where that one happens as my only other FOC purchase was in late May)

Who ever the thieves were who stole the information, they were busy little beavers and smart. Except for the doctor test purchase, they seemed to have made small purchases that were similar to places that i would normally buy things.

I also got a call the other day from a fellow saying he was from CTC Financial and that there were several large charges agains my card. He sounded pretty convincing until his security check question was asking for the last 8 digits of my credit card. He had quite a heavy accent, and the call was quite broken up with lots of chatter noise in the background so definitely an Indian scam call centre.

I ordered after the 7th, I've had no issues. Keep a pretty close eye on my cards.
I stopped counting the amount of data breach notifications I've received over the past 5 years. Or the amount of times the CC company would randomly lock and replace my cards without telling me first. Some of these guys are well funded, state hackers and target secure systems. They've hit Equifax, Microsoft, the CRA, Cisco, the Canadian MOFA, etc etc.

They knew their system was compromised and still posted their big fall sale instead of warning everyone.

Yea you know this is how they operate though...
FOC is the ONLY business, out of all the retailers that not only refused to give restricted transfer reference numbers, but actually told people that they were not allowed to give it out, or that it was impossible to find etc etc...

Who runs that place, a Nigerian prince?

Just had this happen to me. I got a call from a guy claiming to be from my banks fraud department. I check the number and it’s a legit number for my banks fraud centre. He ‘lets me know’ about fraudulent charges and he asks security question which I answer. In the background they are calling my fraud Centre and claiming to be me, and try to stop the hold on the card from the fraudulent charges they have already made! Serious?! They know way more information than I gave the guy who asked the security questions. They don’t get the response they want from my fraud department but do manage to get into my accounts via telephone banking! I’m no dummy but I sure as hell felt like one after this … be fking careful!

Thats a good warning for people. If you ever get a call you aren't expecting say thanks, Ill call you right back - and get the number from the back of your card or their website.

in all my years in canada i ve been contacted over the phone by fraud cc deparment when we were in alaska. they never asked any security question over the phone. other cc is sending text message to approve or not transaction ...thus i was aware of fraudulent uses and that card was used only with FOC.

but again being cautious is not enough.

Was anyone’s card used for any foreign transactions? I’ve shopped with FOC and the card I used was drained in Egypt, but so far it looks like this number skimming op is all Canadian transactions.

Once the cc information is compromised, they sell the information on the darkweb for $$. The purchaser will then either use the card or sell the info in turn...or both. The information can go just about anywhere the darkweb can. The real problem can occur if those on the darkweb decide to do some phishing/digging and get not only your cc numbers, but also enough information on you to impersonate you. This identity fraud can result in other cc in your name, houses, cars, you name it...they will not only destroy your credit rating, they could bankrupt you while you and your lawyers try to catch up. Once they have your info, it doesn't ever end well.

so difficult to contact the impacted clientele ... not all of them are going to be on cgn ...

You have to submit email and other contact information in order to make a purchase and receive your tracking information/ect so FOC clearly can send a mass email to every email address in their database to tell people to check their credit card statements for suspicious/fraudulent charges.

FOC blatantly chose not to warn anyone as they were cashing in on tons of OIC panic/fall sale orders and word of compromised credit processing would have killed a huge portion of those profit margins.

With the conduct demonstrated by FOC it is obvious that customer privacy and security means absolutely nothing as long as they get paid.

SECURITY UPDATE

In October of 2022, we were informed by VISA that there was a security issue on our website resulting in the fraudulent use of credit cards that affected up to 200 clients spanning a four-month period prior. We recognize the severity of this breach and respect your critical right to privacy and confidence in using our platform. Immediate and urgent actions taken have been successful in rectifying this.

A thorough PCI investigation was outsourced to a security firm who conducted a full audit on our website, the scope of which scrutinized our website’s firewall, coding, and remote access and activity logs. The findings revealed a vulnerability in our payment module that had been exploited to allow malware to record credit card information during Checkout.

We want to assure you that, as of 07 Nov, the vulnerability has been patched, and our online security has been upgraded. We have hired a dedicated company that will provide their firewall services to us ongoing, which includes 24/7 monitoring and alerting of potential malicious web activity, and to continually ensure that we are PCI-compliant.

We have been assured that the focus of the malware attack had been on credit card information specifically, and that no other critical personal data points had been targeted.

During this ordeal, many of you have reached out to us and provided personal experiences and information that have aided greatly in achieving resolution. Your collective willingness to offer support despite the exigent circumstances is humbling. To all those affected by fraudulent uses of your credit card, and all who faced the prospect of its exposure, we are abjectly and sincerely sorry.

Your privacy, security, and trust are of utmost importance to us, and its breach is regretful and something we take very seriously. We have taken the lessons learned from this experience and applied them to continue growing and serving you in the future.

Alfredo Pellegrino
President

FOC's President admits they did nothing except take more peoples money allowing more information to be stolen which makes them a accomplice to the credit card frauds by knowingly allowing compromised credit card purchases to continue to be made after VISA alerted them of the breach.

This is a extremely alarming admission of guilt on their part......

Agree with you 2000%

I am not happy about how this is being handled by FOC. Just a post buried in a thread on CGN apologizing? They have all our emails and phone numbers. Let people know so they can take precautions or lock their cards. After big fraudulent charges are put on the card it takes an hour+ of your day talking to the fraud department and 30 day "investigation" and causes unneeded stress. Do the right thing FOC and send out a mass email warning customers! Don't feed us bullcrap saying only 200 peoples cards were compromised. Since they are lying about that might also they be lying about our PAL info being stolen as well? Sure would hate to have that being sold on the darkweb

UGH

Very bad optics for FOC. Based on thier relatively mundane performance with respect to notifying their customers regarding problems they were apparently aware of, i don’t think i will have any dealings with them.

Pretty simple. If you ordered online, they’ll have your email address…

i agree with you and i do not think my post or the previous ones can be seen as defending foc position lol ...

When we purchase online there is a level of responsibility on both ends. The business has to make sure it has a secure system which is typically handled by some other level or business, and we have to be aware of the things that are charged against our cards and ensure that system does not fail us. The fact that credit cards are compromised all the time is a fact and most card companies deal with it as a part of doing business.

Both Personal responsibility and trust has a role here. I cannot fault FOC totally, but yes maybe they should have warned customers, but the shopping cart part of their online business may not be theirs so maybe the role of that warning was left to the company that provides that service.

My lesson from all of this is to be more aware of what is being changed to my card, to utilize an online shopping strategy that minimizes the potential for fraud through 2 step verifications. and using the other security tool available from the company that provides the CC.

It is easy to pile on FOC right now but think of what they were going through. Tens of thousands of online panic purchases over an incredibly short period of time. So much so that they had to close their storefront operation to deal with and keep track of them. Like every other business, the impossibility of hiring competent and trained staff. Same goes for the company providing their online shopping cart system. It was a pretty easy tie for a hacker to make inroads with the malware sitting on some purchasers computer, so is it any wonder that somethings may have fallen between the cracks. I think really maybe we take the lessons learned and each go our own way and lay the blame where it needs to be. At the feet of Trudeau and Singh.

Sorry but that’s not an excuse. They chose profit over doing the right thing for their customers. ####ty timing for them absolutely, but only after they got called out on it did they admit that there was a problem. They need to take a course in ethics.
