An excerpt from a recent thread on the African Hunter forum:
Well, I bit the bullet and am having a new 4 bore rifle side by side made. Ken Owen from Tenn is making it for me. The only bad thing is, it is going to take about 18 months to be completed. Oh well,I am now broke forever, but I am still very excited to have one coming. It really gives me something to look forward to...

... he builds from scratch. He is located in Moscow Tennessee. He has been a gun builder for a long time. My 4-bore side by side will be left handed and have 24" barrels, it will weigh 26 1/2 to 27 lbs. It can handle 2000 grain 1" diameter bullets at 1400 to 1550 ft/sec. It is a big heavy gun, not the most practical, and takes close to 1,000 hours to build. I have alot of big bore stuff and have been shooting big bore guns for about 25 years. It is one of the few guns to move up to after shooting my 700 nitro express Searcy double. I also have a 600 overkill and a 585 wells magnum. The 4-bore will be 3" wide at the top of the receiver and at the beginning of the barrels.

I have not been to Africa but hope to go some day. I have to pay for my rifle first. That will take a while for me, as I am a working family man and don't have unlimited funds like some guys are lucky enough to have.

A family man? I bet his "family" live in a cabinet in the gun room!

Sounds like a man with priorities to me.
Curious how real it is though, to my knowledge there is not a .585 Wells magnum, there is a .585 Nyati and a .510Wells, but wouldn't a guy that owned them know that. Who knows, might be another wildcat, I can't keep track of them all.
I do have a young family and a big bore obsession too, you just have to do it as you can afford. Some guys sink money into cars or whatever, some of us especially on here, sink it into guns.

You came immediaely to mind when I saw that article. A "magnificent obsession" indeed (although rather different than the old movie!) I just hope the poor fella eventually gets to Africa. Still, he must cause quite a stir at the local range.

That is a great link. Most guys would be surprised how well most big bores shoot. With the comparatively low pressures and velocities of the really big rounds, barrel vibration is little and consistent. Most really big guns are easy to make shoot tight groups if you do your part. Of course one hole is half and inch and bigger, in the case of the 4 bore, one hole is about an inch.
It is hard to access 8 bore and 4 bore barrels and actions big enough to use them. I have been looking.
There is a Canadian machinist that made a 4 bore double over about ten years. He uses it and has taken it to Africa. Others on here know him and have shot it. I have some video of him making it and shooting it. Great stuff, great spirit of the old days of African hunting.
A guy living here in Whitehorse owns an old 4 bore double also. I am not sure if he uses it. It's a beautiful old cased gun probably worth more than my house.
Anyone have an 8 gauge gun they want to part with, even a shotgun for conversion?

This guy?

That's it.
I have some home video he took while building it and later shooting it. It's great stuff. That is some amazing work and effort as he worked on it about ten years when he had time. He made a full set of top quality accessories to go with it too. Moulds, dies, screwdrivers, case, everything.
