Shortly after the Colt Woodsman had reached the apex of its popularity in the mid-1920, a small holster making outfit out of California offered up a unique, well-made steel and leather holster which could quickly be slipped off the wearer's belt and attached solidly to the butt of the Colt it was carrying moments earlier.

The owner now had what was effectively a short barreled carbine. Once the shooter was done, they slipped the gun out of its stock, hooked the big steel loop on the back over their belt, and holstered the Colt.

The logo shows N-S, for Neal Schaefer of Ventura, California, and says it was patented 1925. Somehow I've managed to stumble across a couple of them, one VERY GOOD, and the other also VG except for some wear on both upper corners.

Since I no longer own the Colt I'm offering one of them now at an online gun auction down here. Should I put them on something like eBay in order to reach the Canadian Colt collecors? Since it is NOT a gun, eBay will let us list holsters and stocks.

In answer to dan belisle, very simply that metal holder around the butt is a strong clamp and tightly fitted so there's no movement of the gun inside it. Yes, it's specifically for the first generation. I tried it on all my various single shot pistols and the only one it fit was the Fiala. Here's pic of a Fiala wearing it.

Qhergt, only suggestion I can make is to closely compare, side by side if possible, your norc with an early colt Woodsman. If worse came to worse you could always slightly reshape the metal clamp, and if later wanted to sell it, just return it to its original shape. WARNING, due to rarity they're quite pricey!

You should have no trouble buying one from down here. You'd just have to pay Customs' duty on it I believe. I've put one up for sale on GunBroker.com in case you want to pursue it. Just put 153292357 in the GB search window.
