Is a .375 H&H too much gun for Ontario Moose? I'm looking at the new Remington 700 XCR. I already have a set of dies for the .375 but that's not really a deciding factor. What do you guys think?

338win is like raid on moose... kills them dead ;) I've stuffed 338 bullets in one end of a moose and out the other at over 300m with one so there is no lack of power there.

My father & brother shot a moose (14 pointer) simultaneously with a 338 Win Mag & a 300 H&H a few years ago (both my rifles!).

We didn't have to chase him - fell within a few feet!

I've had both. I like both. But I like the H&H more. The recoil is more on the H&H, in the same rifle, but neither is unmanagable. The H&H is a classic and you would be justified in feeling nostalgic when you are in the field. The .338 is a 'wannabe' .375 H&H. Look at the ads and arguements for it: Provides *almost* or *nearly* the performance of the .375 H&H. Pluse the extra diameter and weight of the .375 bullet equates to more momentum and shock to the skeletal system of large game. A moose doesn't really need either, but if you are choosing between the two, take the .375.

I'd go with the .338 Lapua all the way!!! Wait, that wasn't an option:redface: In that case, I like the .375, not that the .338 Win isn't fully adequate, but I like the .375 H&H, its just a classic.:)

With a 250 grain bullet I can slap Wood Bison down with my .338 Win at 300 yards;once ther're hit they don't move. That's a much larger animal than most moose you're going to run into. Just imagine what a .375 H&H could do on your Ontario Moose.;)

The 338 is the better moose round in my opinion, it shoots flatter and is available in lighter rifles with trimmer proportions. Cool factor aside the 338 will take any moose from any angle and handle a grizzly without problems if need be. The right choice in bullets lets you use it for deer to grizzly without exsessive recoil.

I have both, either one will frappe a moose with authority. A guy could argue all day about the pro's and cons about both and you'll still be in the same place as when you started.

You'll not regret either decision.

even a big moose isnt big enough for the 375. remember, it was designed for game in africa . sure does work though! for more penetration i'd lean toward the 338. either one is a monster masher.

Every moose hunter I know has a 338 and loves them. I have a 375 h&h and I like it lots and I got a deal on it. 6 of 1, I'd say.
