For Moose--.338 Win Mag or .375 H&H?

Well, for what it's worth  if I need a bore size larger than my .338 then I'll be stepping up all the way to a .458 Lott or bigger 'cause if a .338 won't do it, a .375 sure as hell won't either

358 Norma better than a 338 and very very close to a 375:D :D :D

I agree with you River Rat but isn't the .358 Norma Magnum obselete? I've never seen one before other than in Cartridges of the World or on the internet.

.358 Win

How about the good ol' .358 Win? If you can't take a moose with a .358, learn to knit.

I have a .35 Whelen but I want something that puts moose down the way a Whelen puts deer down, with authority!

If you don't think a 35 Whelen will "put a moose down with authority" at reasonable ranges, you better guess again. A good 250grain bullet out of any 35 cal WILL do the job, and with authority. Maybe better shooting, instead of a bigger gun, will help alot of people when it comes time to shoot. :)

I am going to TRY to go to the Yukon next year for another moose hunt and am selling a few guns off to pay. One gun that's going to be sold is my 375H&H and my 35 Whelen is the lucky gun going on the tour of duty. I won't be dissapointed with it's performance on moose.

They are about equal on moose I'd say.The 375 is certainly not to big for moose. The 375 ultra is another great moose round. But if I had to decide between the H&H and 338,I buy a 338, then I'd turn the barrel down and add a hi-tech synthetic and get the weight around 7.5 lbs loaded for easy carrying and you would have the perfect rifle for most big game.

Perhaps I haven't shot as many moose with a large bore as some of you, but from what I have seen all they do is pound a hole through, and the moose falls over within a few seconds. Just like a 270 or 30-06.

If you are shooting a broadside moose, they will never know what you use. If you want to shoot one up the azz, then a large, heavy bullet makes sense.

That said, I carry a 358 Norma after moose. But it's due to the grizzlies that live in the same country that seem quite fond of moose meat, not because the moose requires it.

Please pardon my intrusuion, But SC has a 375H&H...I never knew Rem had made pumps in that Caliber

Get a 338, particularly if you are not keen on reloading. The 338WM will do everything the 375H7H can realistically can do, and do it cheaper, without the need for ego stroking cache.

Nice try, but my 375 is a M700. :D

Ego stroking cache must be worth a few $, don't you think?;)
That is why we don't all use a 30-06; something else calms our inner peace. Even if it costs more, is not as easily obtained or any of the other practical points being pushed in favour of the .338 WM. The fact is, the .375 H&H doesn't need any excuses.

well...the H&H does have that "cool" factor to it...

You're damn right. Nice how it slithers out of the mag and into the chamber. Both it and it's 200 brother have a lot of plusses in their favour.

I have both, either one will frappe a moose with authority.

Frappe...I love it :D
