Malaysia has licence to make M4 assault rifles
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has a licence to manufacture M4 carbine assault rifles locally and the potential to export them to other countries in the future, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“We are buying the firearms from the United States but have the licence to produce them now through a local company,” he said yesterday.

Najib, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said they decided to go for the United States-made M4 Carbine as the Steyr rifle had problems because of its limited research and development technology. The Steyrs have been used for 15 years.

“The M4 Carbines are more suitable, effective and have extra capacity compared with the Steyrs.

“We took this decision as we want to enable our soldiers to be soldiers of the future, equipped with the latest modern technology,” he said during question time with student leaders after closing the Overseas Umno Club's leadership course.

The US Congress, he said, had approved the sale of the rifles, which should be delivered in the near future.

Last year, Najib had presented a letter of intent to SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd (SMEO) for the procurement of 14,000 rifles in a RM70mil deal.

SMEO had signed a contract with Colt Defence LLC for the weapons.

While it was not practical to produce all military needs locally, Najib said the country was doing well as it was producing its own Offshore Patrol Vessels and was in the process of producing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) locally.

“UAVs are the way forward in war tactics and many armies are using them as this will help reduce the number of casualties,” he added.
 
This is great news... can never have too many manufacturers, especially when they aren't american.

Umm Malaysia, as in former British Coloney (sorta like we are)...? Not sure there are too many "Hamids" running around saying "allah akbar"...

Okay so that makes them terrorists? Islam is just a religion.... Terrorism is a mide set religion is often used as an excuse for terrorists to gain power and support. There are tons of christian extremests... IRA comes to mind... Does that mean everyone in Ireland is a Terrorist. Oh but wait they are catholic... That must mean the large canadian catholic population are terrorirsts! CANADA IS FULL OF TERRORISTS OH MY GOD! WE ARE A TERRORIST STATE! Come on grow up hounastly.....

Yeah since the Russian hardware they've had access to is sooo underpowered :rolleyes:
i'd rather they had M4's and 203's as opposed to AK's and RPG's

It is so sad people don't even know where Malaysia is!!!

The muslim extremists are in INDONESIA! That's where the Bali bombing is.
 
I think the poster was joking about not knowing the location of Malasia or Malaya as is used to be known. My Dad's friend killed a lot of CT's there during the Emergency.
That country obviously hasn't done their homework; they should have purchased the H&K G-36 and the rights to make it locally as did the Mexicans. Some third world countries have better small arms than us as in G-3's, G-36's, HK-21E's MG-3's like Mexico.
 
I was in Bali in March, Kuta Beach. Drinking in a bar right next to the empty lot where the bombing was. There is a huge monument, I will post pictures if anyone is interested. The people there are muslium, but they are great! Lots of Budda's too. The place was dirt cheap (cheaper than thailand) and the night life was awsome.

All the cabbies take you by where the bombing was, its kind of a tourist attraction now. They also claim that the bombers came from Java? Or up island a little bit and that the crazies are all from there and that normal Bali-ese peoplre are easy goign and tolerent. That was my experiance too, but the bombers came from Java? I think thats the name of the big island.

Greentips.... unfortunately,I reckon your calls will go unanswered...like beating a dead horse.

People who don't know where Malaysia is, are unlikely to know it's neighbouring Indonesia nor know about the civil and political rivalries of the people of those countries.

Some people don't realise that Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims(that's right folks, the majority of Muslims are not from Iraq or even the middle east). People also don't realise that Malaysia is majority muslim. Does being muslim = being a terrorist, NO. In fact, even in nations in conflicts, one would be hard to find a clear thinking individual who believes the respective nations are just populaces of fanatical extremist insurgents. The people who dwell in those nations want stability and a proper lives for themselves too. Afghanistan for example was rather secular several decades ago.

Indonesia has its own problems with radicals, ethnic-hating extremism (eg trying to oust Chinese) and so on.

Malaysia is calm in general.

Much of SE Asia is multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-cultural.

So for anyone who thinks that muslims are all terrorists 'raghead hajis' or what have you, you are disappointing as a Canadian and as a person from a first world nation.
