I plan to shoot down in the USA this year and applied for my form 6 from the ATF quite a while back and have not received anything ?? Anyone else that shoots down there know of the time line for this form ???

A friend of mine just got his.Took him a bit more than 3 months. He purchased a hunting licence for one of the states and supposedly this helped things along for what ever reason. He had to call and check on the progress of his application as well.He is off to North Carolina on Wednesday for holidays and a shoot at one of the sporting clays courses.(Lucky bugger)Hope this helps.

 It is easier to shoot in the former East Block countries than the US! If it is your first From 6, figure 12 to 16 weeks! I have had one every year since they were required. This years took only 4 weeks!:dancingbanana: I hope that you incuded an Alaska hunting license or similar. If you did not, you mot likely will be refused!

For more info, visit Joe Potosky's website, look under going to the US.:

Good luck!
I will have an article on travelling and hooting around the world in the next issue of ClayshootingUSA.

Best regards,

form 6 time line

Freind of mine called last week to see if he could get his quicker because was going to a match this past weekened. They said that they had 545 form 6 in front of his. That they were experiencing a larger number of form 6's.I guess alot more people travelling to USA with firearms.I got mine in 3 weeks.

I think your 1st one takes longer than subsequent ones. Faxing is definately the only way to go. It would not be uncommon for an application to go MIA. Simply fax a new one.

Calling them provides mixed results. Sometimes they can be helpful. Other times not so much. I've been on both sides of this.

Joe's website (listed above) is THE place for practical Form 6 information.

I have never heard of anyone waiting 12-16 weeks. My shoot is not until July and I am at least 6 weeks in but still. Is there a phone number I can call to see if they at least received it ?? I can't seem to find one of my own form 6 nor on the web site above....blind probably.

Perhaps a dumb question, but here goes.

I know there are (at least) two options for a reason on the Form 6. Hunting and target shooting.

If you select hunting, you must include proof of a hunting license. (Alaska - $20 - easy to get online.)

If you select target shooting, you must get proof of an invitation from a club, the dates must be specified, and generally, it seems like more of a hassle.

Now the big question: I am a target shooter only. I haven't ruled out hunting, but targets are my main focus right now. There is a club very close to me in the USA that I'd like to attend upon occasion. Can I get an Alaska hunting license and select hunting as my reason even though I have no intention of hunting?

If the answer is yes, what about the types of guns? I'll be going to Michigan and will be taking .22LR and 9mm handguns, 12ga shotgun w/ 18.5"bbl, .223 rifles (RRA AR-15 and HK SL8-4), and probably a .22LR rifle. I know the border guards can give differing opinions on things but will I be denied entry, or even worse - have something seized - for the reason of not being able to hunt with a 9mm, for example?

Sorry if that's 5 questions in one, but I don't know anyone who has a 6NIA yet and I really don't feel like calling the ATF/State Dept/CBP/FBI/NSA... you get the idea.

I can answer a few.

It doesn't matter if you use a hunting license to get your form6 even if you have no intention of ever going hunting.

I've used a North Dakota hunting license every time I've applied. I've never even been to North Dakota.

At one point I added a .45 pistol to my list just to see what would happen, and it was approved no problem.

Yesterday, I wrote a fairly detailed post about Form 6NIA in the Legalese forum. It is the third post on this page: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=233640&page=4

I believe that a permit issued on the strength of a hunting licence covers circumstances where one is going to the U.S. for either hunting or other lawful sporting purposes, including target shooting. For my reasoning, see the link. If you have a doubt about it, and I don't think that there is any, there's no harm in phoning the ATF and asking.

Also, bmcrea is right that it doesn't matter what State one gets the hunting licence from. Form 6NIA has a note that specifically says so.

Between Form 6NIA itself, which has 18 explanatory notes, and the ATF FAQ on Form 6NIA, there are answers to a lot of questions about the application and permit.

Cheers

Be careful about faxing your application, because they send it back to the fax number you used to fax it.

If you use a milk store or office supply store to fax it, it will get faxed back there. If your fax machine isn't on all the time, they will get a bounced fax and may just give up.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how long it takes. Mine usually takes anywhere from 7-14 days. One day, it's just sitting on my fax machine.

acrashb . Could you please provide the phone and fax # for the BATFE.
Thank you

Q11. Can applications be faxed to ATF?
A. Yes. You may fax your application documents to the Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch at 304-616-4551. If you fax your application, please ensure that any attachments (such as hunting licenses) are legible. We recommend that you photocopy such attachments before faxing them to ensure they are legible.
