I submitted mine this morning and this was the body of the automatic reply.

Thank you for your recent inquiry to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Firearms and Explosives Imports Branch (FEIB). It is the goal of FEIB to respond to requests from industry members and the general public within 90 days of receipt. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT DUE TO THE U.S. GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, FORMS 6 AND 6NIA WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL THE GOVENRMENT REOPENS. THANK YOU.

Not needed for the Form 6 application, but CBP can ask at the border and can also deny entry if one is not provided when requested.

I travelled to a long range course not included in my Match invitation and was cautioned by BATF that I could be refused at the sole discretion of CBP. Despite both being under the Fed Govt, one is run by the Treasury while the latter if under DHS and they don’t have to accept each other’s permits. Go figure.

More documentation is better lest your application to enter justification could be seen as “just because” by them.

In the end I wasn’t refused entry, but it was against the background of a demonstrated legitimate purpose in their eyes I suppose.

If you can enter the US WITHOUT a visa, as we Canadians are able to... You don't need an invitation/hunting lic. or note from your mom for the purpose of getting your F6NIA approved.
 
Having to submit invite letters with the NIA6 I believe USED to be the norm. Not anymore.

That being said, we ALWAYS make sure we have one when crossing. The agent has always taken and looked at it along with checking the serial #'s. Never simply been waived through, ever, without a serial # check.

When we flew down to a TPC course we had both the invite and the invoice. That particular agent was working on old info, told us they were letting us through but our NIA6 was filled in incorrectly. It wasn't and the ATF agent who emailed us our completed form got back to me within hours when I inquired about that incident. He even told me to have the border agent call the office when we were going down the next week. Thankfully we got an agent who knew his stuff and after the cursory check let us through. After an hour in secondary!!!!!!!!! Took an hour for our bags to get recalled, ugh. I'll take a book next time, no digital devices in secondary.
 
filling my 1st form and wondering about time. i don't see anywhere in the application a question about when is this form valid from and for how long

does that mean if I list a bunch of my guns i will be able to take any of those guns (assuming when i do cross the border i have an invite to a match or a hunting license to make crossing easier) for a period of time that they will give me ? say like a month or a year from application ?

is that how this works ?
 
The form will be valid for 1 year from the date that you put on before you sign it. No post dating.

You require a personal invite every time you go down. If you have a rifle and you are only going to a pistol match, don't take the rifle because they can turn you away.

My form 6NIA expires in a few days so I sent in for new permit today... Here is the auto-reply received:
