Hey guys,
Just bought an ACR enhanced restricted version and kept looking for a gunsmith who could put a non-restricted barrel on it. I'm sure anyone who owns or is looking to own an ACR non-restricted has seen the thread "ACR barrel blues" and knows that Questar barrels have been less than ideal. Questar also no longer sells these barrels (don't call them about it too, I received a very curt and somewhat angry response) so I kept looking for someone to fill the void.

I'm happy to say that there is a reliable gunsmith who can do the job!
If you contact Herron Arms (he asked me not to put down his email), the big boss Ian will take care of you. The prices are more than reasonable and let's face it...if you own a 3000 dollar AR like the ACR you should be able to afford a match-grade barrel. He has apparently already matched a few barrels and they have worked quite well. So for all of you complaining about not being able to get a decent barrel that's 1:7 instead of 1:9...this is the place to go!

Now all we need to do is get the parts for the barrel, Extension, Piston Block, and etc so we can use the quick change features of the rifle.
If you dont mind can you PM me the email I would like to talk to them about a few barrel options and ideas.

Thanks,

Jesse

Hi Jesse,
Ian has said he has ordered the parts from Bushmaster, but as we all know they suck and they haven't been able to get them out to him yet. However, he will have those parts eventually so I would definitely talk to him. He has specifically asked me not to give out the email, so you should just call Herron Arms in Ontario and tell him the chipmunk sent you. The number is on Firearms Canada. It is nine-zero-five-seven-seven-nine-zero-seven-seven-one.

BM will not ship out gas system parts. Ian will use your gas system as well as the barrel extension from the original factory barrel. This is the best way to go anyhow. Then you will have a finely tuned quality barrel.

What shop was that? As far as I understand the only available factory option is the 16" barrel for now.

I also just spoke to Ian at Herron Arms about doing a custom barrel for me, great guy spent alot of time talking about options and guns in general.

The local shop just got in some restricted ACRs and said that factory NR ones would be arriving soon.

I don' think that was a surprise. ?
Wasn't Questar selling barrels from them before.

Questar isn't doing them anymore, for more information check out Blaxsun's and angryeyebrows thread on how they apparently completely screwed it up and denied it leaving their customers in the cold. For any new ACR owner (and they are starting to trickle in), there weren't a whole lot of options. Alberta Tactical didn't want to do it, Questar is refusing to do it after that fiasco, and so far the only reliable gunsmith who has done non-restricted barrels before for these rifles is Ian from Herron Arms.

Oh yeah, that rumor. I've been hearing that rumor and had my 3000 dollar preorder down for nearly a year and a half. Eventually just gave up on it. Also, the factory barrel is 1:9 twist which sucks for heavier bullets and only comes in the basic configuration. I love the folding stock in the Enhanced as well as the aluminum rails, so for an Enhanced owner it makes more sense to put a good match grade barrel on there.

Not for the ACR, but it's entirely possible they did for some of the other firearms (FS2000, PS90, etc.)

If we all collectively had a nickel for every time Bushmaster has promised something... I'm holding out for the factory NR barrel as well. Mainly because it's a lighter/lower profile version. Fingers crossed...

Holy crap, it's the King of Black Rifles himself! :D I got tired of waiting for Bushmaster to make good on anything they promised. Has anyone even seen the 6.8 conversion yet? I hear they already canceled 7.62x39. I'm tired of waiting, just went for the stainless 18.7 inch barrel. If they do start coming out with factory non-restricted lengths I'll just get one for 6.8 or something.

No one's seen the 6.8SPC conversion kit yet, either (it's almost as mythical as the factory barrels...). It's been a looooong wait, with no end in sight...

Great news about the gunsmith. Anyone have any idea about the process? Do I just buy a barrel and get it shipped out to sask or do I need to send my gun to him to fit the barrel?

Any rough estimate of the price?

Hey Studstin,
Yeah, I talked to Ian for like an hour combined over the past two days. He's probably tired of talking to me. It's a better idea to send your gun to him so he can custom fit the gas block and taper pins and whatnot on it. I heard those were the major problems with the Questar ones, and also the fact they tended to wiggle. Ian said he custom fits every barrel so he can make sure that the ACR works the way it's supposed to. He also doesn't do mass production ones and every barrel is built for you. You can always just order the barrel blank first and then send your gun in to him. His prices seem pretty reasonable to me although I'm not too sure of the options - I got a stainless match grade in .223 wylde in 1:7 twist with AR threads for compensators and such and cerakoted black finish for less than a grand. I don't want to say the exact price because I'm not sure exactly what his deals are. You should just call him at the number I posted above. I know the Questar ones were only 400, but if you throw in the fact that it does come with cerakote, has the threading built in already, and is custom fit, I think it is well worth it to have a reliable gunsmith building it for you.
