Found a gunsmith that does Non-restricted ACR Barrels!!

Why? The whole point of the ACR is that you can remove the whole barrel assembly (gas block, piston, etc.) I'm not sure how sending the entire rifle offers any additional benefit unless they're going to test-fire it. The problem with the Questar ACRs is that the gunsmithing on them was sh*t - and that was when they had the rifle to test with (which they obviously didn't in more than a few instances).
 
Great stuff guys. I appreciate you taking the time to bring me up to speed. I am not sure what direction i will end up going (i havent told my wife yet that she is going to sign for the gun on monday - she will be so suprised).

They are going to test-fire it. I want to make sure I don't get the whole mess up that happened to Angry Eyebrows. I can remove the assembly, where did I say you couldn't? I just don't want the same dumbass mistakes with the canted gasblock etc and with a live fire test they can make sure it doesn't malfunction, so I think it's a better idea. I didn't say other people had to, but it seems like the only way to verify it. Even getting up to a few hundred rounds isn't going to mess up the rifle. Hopefully. Other people can go ahead and just send in their barrel assembly, I'm not saying that's a terrible idea either. All I know is they asked me to send it in if I want to be sure it works and I will.

Make sure that "the doghouse" is big enough for you and the dog:D

I've equipped mine with wall to wall carpeting and running water/electricity and cable TV to make my stay as comfortable as possible until the wife lets me back in the real house after a gun purchase:)
 
Thanks for the post this is great, I am sending mine off next week to get started. Looking forward to a new and improved barrel, it will hopefully tied me over until they get factory barrel kits out, or even better would be factor parts so we can get more custom barrels done.

Glad you were able to talk to Ian :). It's just given how long most of us have already waited for the factory barrel kits, conversions and other parts - I figure this is a good way to pass the time and still have a non-restricted barrel. Which one did you order?

The whole "mess" with Angry had to do with the fact that it was a crap conversion and the ACR was missing the recall modifications. I think canted gasblocks are just sloppy, and you shouldn't need the rifle to remedy that. But if this makes you feel better, by all means go for it (in the US there are numerous ACR owners who get custom barrels and modifications just by sending out their assemblies).
 
For most of the shooting I do, it is done on a range where we do alot of CQB drills and I would really like to use my ACR as a replacement for my AR, so I went with a 12.5" SS threaded barrel with a Nit-ride (might have that word wrong) coating.

Blaxsun - I do agree that at first I thought it was a little odd to have to send the whole rifle but after talking to Ian about what he does and how he does it I felt very reassured that by sending the rifle I was going to get the absolute best product for my money so I was fine with the little bit extra in shipping.
 
Ya zupermann, i havent thought of a good way to break it to her. The last two guns i bought were local so she didnt need to know about them.

Herron's site looks good. Nice to see a few more professional gun web sites popping up.

Nice! I've heard that 12.5" is probably the perfect barrel length on an ACR. Now you just need the polymer handguard to cover the piston assembly and lighten it just a smidgeon more. :D
 
Yeah I am excited, then an 18" factory barrel when and if they every get released.
I ordered the polymer handguard in already and I think its a fantastic option, in my opinion far better than the railed version, should look good with the new barrel.
I think I am going to put a Claymore break on it as well.

Wait, you were able to get the REMINGTON polymer handguard?! That one is way better than Bushmaster's but I thought it was limited to LE/military only! Thanks man, I need that for sure! Maybe they'll even have the metal lower eventually.

The civilian side of Remington is Bushmaster. And Remington doesn't make a polymer hand guard; they have two military-only versions (one which is similar to the civilian version).
 
Correct it is not a Remington branded handguard it is just sourced from a Remington Civilian supplier as Bushmaster and Remington are the same company. Sorry for any confusion.

Remington or Bushmaster the polymer handguard does look good on the ACR and I am happy with the purchase. The fact that all of the MOE parts work on it is a great feature for sure.

I wouldn't necessarily say they got anything right... just that they didn't screw it up royally. Yet. The recall issues, selector placement, severe lack of spare parts (particularly barrel assemblies and components) and the continual delay on new barrels, conversion kits, etc., however, haven't exactly endeared any but the faithful, either. Shrubmaster, indeed... ;)
