Found this in my barn......what is it??

This is what it used to look like ... ;)

You'll find a 125 pic photo montage of an "all correct" with clear detailed markings 1887 I.G. (Infanterie-Gewehr) Model 71/84 (11mm) Mauser (click here)http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=71, displayed in the Germany - Milsurp Knowledge Library (click here) http://www.milsurps.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

Finding them in really good condition can be a challenge. Personally, I love shooting this vintage of old milsurps.

Hope that helps ... :)

It's a Model 82 Trainer. Missing the forearm, bolt, blade and sling swivels and foresight guard. Serial should be stamped into the heel of the grip.

Nope, antique, made before 1898 and the 11x60 mm is not a commonly available cartridge.

Commonly available has nothing whatsoever to do with it's antique status.

To be legally an Antique, for registration (as in not required!) it must meet 3 criteria.

It must be made prior to 1898.

It must not be a repeater. (guys have welded up some of the old repeaters to qualify)

It must have a bore diameter over 8.3 mm.

The "commonly available cartridge" condition was much bandied about, but never made it into the firearms act.

Cheers

It's a gen-yew-wine an-ti-quee in the form of a sportered Model 1871 Mauser. Calibre is, of course, 11.15x60R, made in Canada until 1968 as .43 Mauser.

Mine did not look much worse than that when it came out of the chicken-coop it was stored in, but I cleaned it up and have had many years of fun with it. These things are an absolute BALL to shoot....... look like a .22, but with a bark like a freakin' cannon. Only problem is that if you're gonna hunt with it, you have to do so in regular season...... seems it's not as "primitive" as those bolt-action, scope-sighted, laser-ranger-finder-equipped muzzleloaders. Still, it could be a lotta fun to play with.

Congrats on your trophy and good luck playing with it.
