Ok enough already....you’re going to have me going over budget if you keep posting photos like this!! :bangHead:
I know, I know!!!! V:I:
You gona have to stop looking Frank because you didn't see nothing yet :)
Quote by GUNSAHOLIC The only way to keep within budget when partaking in a gun project is if you don't have a budget!

Please tell us more about this project and the engraver that is doing this work. It looks beautiful.

James is right, http://lemieuxarmuriers.com/en/armuriers/ Paul is doing the engraving, Paul is part of the Christian Lemieux team, Chris Dawe http://stillwaterrestorations.ca/ is Basically doing everything else except the case colour or french gray done by Oskar Kob 1-902-587-2257 Go to Let's see some pic's of your SxS's & O/U's starting page 151 and up to see the Weekly pictures. Thanks

John, that's making me think.....are you going with French Grey or sticking to the CCH?

Good question James, I don’t know yet, I talked to Chris about it and I think he said go with CCH the gold come out better that way, Christian Lemieux like FRENCH GREY, I still have to talk to Oskar about it, I think Oskar have to do the CCH before he can do the French grey, If that the case I can lock at the CCH and decide with way to go. Personally I like CCH, but I like to do what will look the best, What do you think?

Before i answer that John, answer this for me. It looks like you have a couple spots for game scenes on the bottom of the action. Tell me what's going in there and what style of engraving is to be used. Is it very fine bulino creating a highly detailed scene or is it more more classic style of engraving?

Edit: I'm not waiting! LOL

CCH will hide the engraving. May make the gold pop but that's a relatively small part of the overall look. If I was spending the money you are on the engraving, there is no way I would leave the CCH colours to hide all that beautiful workmanship.

I love good CCH but it does not show off engraving, IMHO. The pieces will HAVE to be CCH'd to get their hardness back, so you will be able to see it with the colours. While there are different methods of creating the French grey finish, it's basically dipping the CCH'd (or blued) metal into a mild acid solution for a brief period, then removing, rinsing, stabilization the "etch" with a baking soda solution and then getting some oil on there before rust can start. Often to really make the engraving pop, India ink is rubbed into the metal and then buffed off, leaving the dark ink in the recesses to give a really good contrast.

Here's a link to a nicely done bit of French Grey that includes a gold inlay.

If anyone can tell me how to make that pic appear here, let me know. I grabbed it from another forum.

Ditto!

To put all the inquiring minds to rest ...the initial engraving thoughts wasn't quite so detailed as what John's gun has now become , so CCH was the initial and traditional treatment thought ...now with what's being done French Grey is really the only sensible route ,india ink is not how it's traditionally done ,nor is chemical etch - its CCH and then carefully polished back .

Trying to capture engraving on a CCH action in a internet pic usually looks like #### ...that same piece in hand is a world apart ,but opinions being what they are;) .....

Now ,while i'm on a roll...to all the guys out there who comment on this stuff I'm truly honored and flattered by the comments as are my friends at Lemieux .But there are couple of key points you must all consider when contemplating a project like this

#1-Don't start of with a structurally or mechanically crap gun ...this cannot be emphasized enough

#2 - Have a clear game plan ,Myself or the Lemieux team encourage dialogue,we are there for you the customer ....but don't look to us to tell you how to spend your money and decide later its not what you wanted because friends on the internet say its not what they like

#3- Have a clear picture of how much you want to spend , custom metal work and engraving can be tailored to budget to a certain extent ,as can the checkering and stock furniture ...but please educate yourselves as to what these services generally cost ,this is our livelihoods and passion - but be damn sure we don't do it for the money!...the costs may seem high at first but break down the hours we work and what we pocket at the end of a project and most would find it quite depressing .....so please began a project with at least some understanding that the costs will start at a minimum of 2500 for a very basic upgrade ,and that 6 months as a minimum time frame.

And lastly ,thanks to everyone who support us through commissions ,kind words and lip service:cheers:

Cjdawe...well said.
I hesitate to tell people what they should do to their guns. I know we all have different tastes. I love restorations and upgrades...way more than guns that are in original “well worn out” condition...but that’s me. I love the look of that fox and can’t wait to see it finished.

And I know what I would want in that round spot on the bottom of the receiver....I would immortalize an 11 year old friend and warrior who has never let me down in the field...
