Hi,

I've owned all kinds of pistols and revolvers in my life, striker, hammer, steel, polymer, aluminum, long, short... I also shot all the pistol/revolver calibers on the market (almost all of them) :) I now mostly shoot Glocks and I've also, at one point or another, own most models Glock made over the years. I consider myself a good shooter and my fundamentals are also very good (being a shooting instructor).

Early 2018 I will be getting a STI Costa Carry Comp in 9mm (I never shot a STI pistol) The goal is to participate in 3 gun matches and also IPSC matches in open division.

http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2017/05/robert-farago/new-sti-costa-carry-comp-pistol

Now, besides the price difference, is this a good move ? would I be better off with an open fully modified Glock 17 or 34 or STI is really what they are said to be ?

I wrote to a guy on youtube who does IPSC competition in the states with his Costa Carry Comp and he said that it is the most amazing pistol he ever owned in his life ! But that's one opinion. What is yours ?

I would appreciate comments from Cgn'ers who actually shot both style of pistol. 2011 and Glock

Thanks guys

The 2011 is a much better platform in general. That looks like a really awsome pistol but doesn't fit well in any ipsc class. As you stated, it would be an open division gun and would be against the 9mm major guns witch shoot very flat with likely more efficient comps, frame mounted optics and large mag wells

You are right about IPSC open divison but being a tactical type of shooter I do wanna win 3 gun competitions but for IPSC I just wanna beat my own personal best and grow as a shooter. I like this specific model because it is ''tactical'' and supposedly the smoothest, flattest shooting pistol on the market !

What makes this gun "Tactical"?

What are your plans for open division in IPSC? You would still need to mount an optic.. run a comp? Not looking like a good choice for Open.

I prefer a level 3 holster on a battle belt and I train with AR15, pistol and shotgun. I have nothing against the ''racing'' type of training and equipment but that's not me. That's WTF it is !

the picatinny rail, the trigger pull being harder than a race gun. the comp is part of the barrel. and again I have no choice but running open since there's a comp on the pistol.

my plan is just to play the game and get better at it. that's all. I will mostly run 3 guns anyways

As has been mentioned, a 2011 in Open may handicap you. But if you don’t care and just want to beat yourself in times, then go for it. The Costa is an expensive gun for your experiment but it’s your money.

I personally prefer a striker fired handgun for 3G. I hate fumbling with safeties. But CZs are very popular in 3G so it’s only my opinion.

Personally, if I were you. I’d stick with your Glock. You already know the platform. Rather than spending more coin for a limited use pistol, I would rather spend the money on ammo and training. After all, Glocks are arguably more “ tactical” than a race gun.

That would be my argument from a practical standpoint as well. Throwing practicality out the window, it is a NICE pistol, never shot one but it looks pretty cool from the pics.

are three gun matches held in dark necessitating a mounted flashlight? or are the target close enough to make a mounted bayonet useful?

also per the trigger, whats an appropriate rockwell hardness for a "tactical" trigger?

they are held at night a few times a year and the trigger is at 3.5 - 4 lbs.

can we go back to the subject instead of debating what tactical means or if I really need a tac light on my pistol ?

simply put..............being a Glock guy, will a STI 2011 pistol blow my mind ?

Now, to answer this question, you need to have shot both. You can't help me if you haven't !

I've shot both. The 2011 blew my mind
Shoot a 2011, if it fits your hand and the trigger is great (usually are) go a head... It really depends on what discipline you want to be competitive in

You should probably re-evaluate shooting Open in IPSC if you don't plan on mounting an Optic.

Most likely won't be that fun not having the same advantage as everyone else in the division.

The 2011 is way better then a Glock, but I am biased and hate Glocks. If you are comfortable with Glocks, don't want to mount an optic, why not just shoot a Glock in 3 gun so you can mount your light or whatever and still be able to shoot Production in IPSC and be competitive.

follow up question, are DBALs and NVG no go if dark stages are frequent? or are you just not competitive?

also does the requirement of 3.5-4 lb trigger rule out M&P and Glocks as tactical? :(

ps: comparing glocks and 2011s is kinda like comparing formula one cars and dump trucks, to each his own but theres a limit to this stupidity

Wow, apparently lots of the guys who hang out in this forum are arrogant dbags.

Best of luck on trying to get some insight OP, looks like it will continue to be a roast.

If you can justify the purchase, go for it. Post a review and more pics in pistols & revolvers thread.

I started in 2011 with a tricked out Gen 3 Glock 35. I did everything to it. In 2013 I got a 2011 and never looked back. Night and day. The 2011 is just so much easier to shoot.

I was just saying that the minimum trigger weight for tactical training, for me, would be 3.5 - 4.0.

man I think you drink to much, if not....you should start drinking cause you're having a hard time following buddy

and yes I agree with you, there is a limit to stupidity !
