Two evenings of:
- pounding the taper pins with a hammer, no doubt making it worse...
- 3in1 penetrating oil
- propane torch
- drill press (not in that order)

In the end, an angle grinder, down as close as I dared, then a Dremel tool down to nearly the barrel, and finally, clamping the front sight in a vise, and taking a cold chisel to the bayonet lug and the sling loop, and voila... one removed front sight. Even saved the front handguard retainer (sort of - nothing some tremclad won't hide!)

I just shaved my front sight block to instal a quad rail. I decided to shave it rather than remove it because it has the taper pins. I didn't want a gas block that just uses set screws.

It took way to long with the little dremel tool I had. I should have bought an angle grinder to do the big parts then finished with the Dremel.

Word to the wise: if you do this, wear a mask. I had eye protection but I didn't wear a mask and I was blowing black s@#t out of my nose for two days.

I dremelled my first one off as well to fit below a rail. Had to take it down to almost nothing.

I should have worn a mask as well!! I had the black snot coming out for a bit.

Guys contemplating this and adverse to buying either a Dremel or a grinder can get it done easily with a decent hacksaw and bastard file.
Hardly any fun in taking on a project without the thought of new toys or tools to add to the collection though.:p

try working with metal for a living boys, the black sh!t is just part of everyday life. and you need not worry, according to worksafe bc it's not bad for you....

Exactly what I was thinking lol. I can't remeber the last time it wasn't black. I wouldn't be too concerned, it's tactical.

I actually lol'd. Especially with all the Tactical BS threads lately. I got mud on me today at the range. Does that make me an operator?!

Heh... Should have really just cut it down as opposed to cutting it off, that'll be the best fitting and most solid gas block you'll get. But hey, it's yours after all...
