Looking for tips or for anyone else that owns this Savage. Came with a Simmons cheap-0 scope. I have burned through a few boxes of ammo to zero the scope and I can't get any kind of accuracy I'm happy with at the range. 100yds.

First shot, close to bullseye, adjust scope, shoot again, a bit closer and by the 4th or fifth shot, the gun gets a little wild... and bullseye may as well be a moving target.

My .223 savage has a medium weight, fluted barrel and is a treat to shoot at the range. The .270 is frustrating.

Could the gun be going a little wild as the barrel heats up, is it the wrong gun for the range? Should I dump it on a hunter before I spend a pile of dough?

The 270 is definitely not the ideal choice for a range rifle, and neither is the Simmons scope.A 260 rem,7mm-08 or 308 win would all be better choices, preferably with a heavier barrel.

The new package guns all come with a Bushnell Sportsman; that Simmons scope is mediocre at best. Best thing to do is replace the scope and cheap base/rings that come with that package gun. Probably solve your problem.

That said, I have a 300 mag package Savage with the Simmons scope that I barely shoot but it seems to hold zero fine. But the screws for the rings were loose from the factory causing erratic behavior when I first took it out. Pulled them all off and used loctite and it holds zero now with the el cheapo scope.

A friend of mine suspects two problems with the rifle: the scope, and that the gun probably gets wild as the light barrel heats up.

I might be mistaken, but I believe my 30/06 came with a Bushnell Sharpshooter?? Long story short, shook mine loose in about 20 rounds(well, maybe a bit more), wouldn't shoot any better than 2.5" at 100 meters. It wouldn't track right, wouldn't hold zero. Told the dealer, he exchanged the scope and it's now headed for a rimfire.

After the scope change(now a Bushnell Trophy), consistent 1.4-1.5" with factory cheapy Federal stuff, and the reloads that were previously shooting 2.5" are hovering at 1".

Also, don't warm up the barrel too much or they'll start spreading. Just one guys opinion. Good luck.

this is exactly how mine behaves

One thought that has not been mentioned is bullet weight. If you are shooting 150's try 130's etc. If this pulls things together play with brands in the weight your gun likes. That said I would first do as the others say. Tighten everything up and also try a known good scope. Also watch the flinch factor. .223 up to a .270 might expose a flinch you didn't know you had. Thats all I can think of. Good luck tracking down the accuracy gremlin.

Oh one otherpossible thing not mentioned. Savage stocks are notorious for touching the barrel. Check to see this is not happening. Check close if using a bipod as well.

How long are you taking to shoot the 4 shots? I had a Savage 300WM and the thin barrel would heat up very quickly and cause problems. Now I'm not saying that is your problem, but it might be if you let the rifle cool down fully and it goes back to hitting the same point of aim. After a couple of shots you may need to wait quite a while for it to cool.

When your barrel gets warm to the touch STOP SHOOTING!

I can shoot 5shots out of my .264 with a Heavy fluted barrel before it is to hot to shoot with out risking damage. But my .300win with sporter contour barrel gets to hot after only 3rnds.

I suspect the cheap optics I wouldn't trust on a .22lr and over heating the barrel are the areas where you're going wrong.

Remove scope and rings +bases put under tire and back over it.Problem solved.Replace with nice two piece Burris or Leupold bases ,Leupold rings then a Leupold ,Burris or Bushnell 3200.A Savage bolt action should shoot MOA off the bench any day.....................Harold

Could you clarify something for me.Did you buy this gun to hunt with ,or as a range gun to shoot targets with? Somehow,I understood that you bought this gun for target shooting at the range. If that is the case, there are far better choices for target shooting.

I own that exact rifle.

Get a new scope. Mine broke after three days of hunting in -20 weather.
Ensure barrel is free floated. Keep in mind that the sporter barrels accuracy will really wander after 5 rounds. My rifle gets 1.5 MOA with 150 gr Super-x and sub MOA with federal 130 gr sp

Simmon's is made by Tasco I think? I saw the crosshairs fall out of a brand new Simmon's in less than 10 rounds of .270Win once...............a buddy picked up a Accu-stock SS 116 in .338 and it shoots 1/2" or less right out of the box!.............Harold

yup, that's what I did as a total noob. It was my first NEW rifle purchase after getting my PAL. My old man had given me his old Cooey shotgun and 64B.

I did very little research and all I knew was that Savage was accurate for the dough. Didn't know about thin barrels and heat. To me, the rifle was a nice cannon (.270 flies fast and flat, correct?) for a reasonable price.

It has pretty much sat in the cabinet this last season. Trips to the range have been to smash clays and chew through a lot of .22lr with the gf and her daughter. I take my 223 when I feel like shooting something a bit bigger.
