Looking for the definitive answer. Will a full choke barrel be damaged if used with slugs? Does anyone have proof (pictures?) of a full choke barrel damaged by slugs?

NO... rifled slugs are hollowed out so that when fired they conform to the width of teh barrel all the way down.... there may have been cases in the past where barrels were damaged but that would be because of faulty ammunition.... not because you shouldn't be able to fir slugs from a choked barrel...

It won't, simply because the rifling exists as a safe guard. I've fired a lot of slugs through a full choke no problem.

Consider the following:

1. When Foster slugs were first introduced in the 1930s, the most common choke was full and most hunters had one shotgun they used for everything. Specialized guns for shooting slugs did not exist until the 1950s.

2. Have you ever seen a warning on a box of slugs against firing them out of a full-choked barrel? Given the litigious society we live in, it seems improbable that manufacturers would neglect to include a warning if there was an issue.

Foster style slugs(rifled slugs) are NOT AN ISSUE in a full choke. Sabot style slugs are designed for rifled barrels and NOT designed for a choked barrel.

Here's an interesting little experiment you can conduct.

1) Pattern your full choke shotgun at 30 yards.
2) Fire 50 foster slugs through your full choke barrel.
3) Again pattern your full choke shotgun at 30 yards with exactly the same ammunition as in A.
4) Post the results.

Slugs will not cause catastrophic damage to your gun, but over time and after many slug rounds, your full choke might not be as full as it once was.

Lead versus steel barrel ...

I have never seen a steel shotgun barrel damaged by shooting a lead slug, regardless of choke - full or extra full...

I recently acquired a Winchester Model 50 12 Ga 2 3/4 Full choke, and thought I'd never be able to shoot anything but target loads through it. I am thrilled to entertain the thought of using rifled slugs. I understand that SS shot is not healthy for older barrels.

Does ANYONE here think I'll damage my shotgun using slugs? It's a family firearm that came to me in the original box with receipts from the 50's. I'd never forgive myself it I hurt it.

No problem shooting slugs through any choke. Provided they are not Damascus barrels. Accuracy will differ though.

Rifles shotgun slug guns existed long before the 50's used in Africa and India with leaf sights clear out to 300yards + for ball + conicle.

I should have said that dedicated slug guns were not readily available in North America until the 1950s. I'm familiar with Paradox guns (which use a rifled choke to handle both shot and single bullets), but they weren't exactly common, most being high-end British double guns.

Rifled Slugs through a full choke...sure thing!! My Father filled his moose tag back in 2004 with a bull ..Using..nothing else but.....A Cooey 84 12 gauge, full choke, front bead..bout 60 yards, 1 shot (Winchester 1oz 1600 fps) through the lungs/shoulders..dropped em where he stood. Dead before he hit the ground. Slug stopped just under the skin on the opposite side. Yeah, I'd say you can shoot em through a full choke..and yes, they can kill moose within the proper distance.
