Anyone have any experience with full sized 1911 22lrs?

Ideally, I'd love to have a full sized 1911 (unlike the ###y little Browning 1911 22s) while being able to get some serious trigger time at the expense of only .22lrs.

Any recommendations?

GSG or Sig are the two that are most popular. Run that in Search and you'll find alot of recent threads that talk about them. Chiappa is also an option but doesn't seem to have as solid a history of reviews overall. Colt is alot more expensive but not necessarily worth it.

You could also just go with a conversion top end. Save a few bucks and practice with your ' real ' 1911's trigger and grip.

If you already have a 1911 lower and if they're available in Canada get a Marvel 22 conversion upper. They are amazing. You can use the same lower you use with your 45 so they're perfect for 22 practice. With good ammo they can easily achieve 1 inch groups at 50 yards (yes, that's 50 YARDS). If you have a lower with a good trigger pull you have yourself a great bullseye gun as well.

Nighthawk's conversion(made by Marvel) is well made and functions well with bulk ammo. Wanstalls has sold them in the past.

Thanks everyone; some great options to consider here. I like the idea of the conversion kit. Might refocus to look more for an ideal proper 1911 alongside the conversion kit. Will likely pay a little more, but then I see the value in getting more trigger time on the same handgun.

Argument just got shot out the window for saving a little money on a smaller .22 though! No one is here to save money, though.

I just ordered a GSG 1911 .22 in tan and will pick it up soon. I am having a few concerns however after reviewing threads on a 1911 specific forum. After reading through 39 pages of posts there, dating back to 2009/2010 and progressing to recent posts, a number of initial isues arose with some supposedly being addressed while others still seemed to be lingering.

To Jester and Shanks, did either of you replace the guide rod with aftermarket versions? Do you have the older ones with the solid round guide rod or the newer X shaped rods? Any issues with the barrel bushing (should be magnet-attracting on newer ones) unlocking from around the recoil spring plug? How about the barrel set screw coming loose? How is the slide holding up around the slide stop, any deformation on the slide? These were some of the issues. I'd be very, very interested in anyone's info who has used the guide rod/spring/plug from cwaccessories (they don't ship to Canada though) as they claim their kit eliminates the need for the barrel set screw and improves repeatable accuracy. I note that ZRTactical Solutions seems to make a copy-cat version of the cwaccessories guide rod kit and they apparently market in Canada through Blueline, just FYI.

Issues aside, shooters seemed to love the gun.

I have a full length steel guide rod and upgraded recoil spring from a company in the states whose name escapes me at the moment but I'll try to dig it up and post it. No issues with the bushing or the set screw, but I tighten it (screw) before every session. Runs great, I have a few thousand rounds through it and me only complaint would be the wear to the finish (I have the od sig version). My gun hated the dlask recoil buffers I ordered, caused me headaches until I pulled it out and put the stock one back in. Seemed too tight a fit, if I shaved them down they'd probably work fine.

OP, sorry for the sorta hijack.

Edit: it was from GSG pro, they ship up here. Check out Blueline tho, they were going to start to carry more upgrades for these guns.

i have the SIG which is just a renamed GSG and i love it.
solid gun and runs like a dream.
i have fed it all sorts of bulk ammo and havnt had any problems yet.
really nice stock sights on it too.
only thing i did to mine was replace the stock grips (where were nice wood ones) with a set of Hogue.

upon looking around it looks like i have a youtube video from when i got mine last summer.

I too have one (in the tan as luck would have it). I have put 2k rounds through mine with not much trouble at all. Mine likes HV ammo, and shoots like a dream. Yeah the finish isnt great, but other than that its a champ, seriously looking at getting a second one and tricking it out with fibre optic sites, zrts deluxe kit and bushing (just so the slide cone and bushing match), and maybe having the slide and frame anodized or guncoated.
The one suggestion I can make is to look at your ammo. I use CCI tactical .22 (375 box), which is pretty much bulk minimags, but they have a pretty thick wax coating thag can sometimes cause FTF....and as with all .22 ammo, if it doesnt go bang pull the trigger again.

Edit: make sure you have at least 5 mags...cause the damn thing is a lot of fun to shoot!

This has been excellent guys, thanks again. As always, too many choices, although it doesn't look there's a bad choice.

Currently weighing either a Colt Gold Cup/GSG, or to get a good solid .45 (looking at a Ruger 1911SR1) with a Nighthawk/Marvel conversion kit. All in all, good problems to have.

Another vote for the GSG 1911 .22 lr...

I've owned a real deal Colt .22 conversion unit for many, many years. My Colt unit:

I also own a GSG 1911 .22lr. I am very impressed with the GSG pistol. For the money, IMHO you can't go wrong with this.

My GSG 1911 .22lr [I put a set of Hogue soft grip panels on it]:

Target shot with GSG using typical bulk econo hi-vel .22 ammo:

Interestingly, I also found that the GSG mags worked with my Colt unit.
