These rifles are lots of fun and still the best buy out there as far as I'm concerned.
I'm having a lot of fun with mine. The suckers are going for 139 bucks in some places. How can you lose?
I picked one up last year that first shot 10 inch groups at 25 yards. With a lot of tweaking, re-crowning, barrel seating, and hand loading, I can hit smaller than a 3 inch group at 100 yards now.
Hunted with it most of last year. Took several deer and will probably take it hunting again next year.

I picked up two of them over the past winter. One hand picked 1929 with a hex receiver from Wiemajack (i might be butchering the spelling of his user name), and the one just this past weekend from The Ammo Source for $139 on sale.
I've got an S&K scout mount on the way and a scout scope as well to throw on the $139 special. I can't wait to blast away and have a soar shoulder.
I've got a crate of surplus to blast though between the scoped one im throwing together, and an SVT-40 i picked up as well.
The 1929 with the hex receiver is beautiful looking. The bolt/barrel is like new just about.
I wish the stripper clips were more readily available, or came in the surplus case like they do with the 7.62x39.

Make sure you post with some results of your scout scope? There are stripper available for Mosins, you gotta check with some of the sponsors. They're made from both Czeck and Russian.
I picked up a M44 carbine a month ago, it looks like it has barely been fired. I slugged the barrel and it was strong and deep. There are some really good deals to be had out there.
I figure if you're going 7.62x54R, there are lots of toys to choose from with a great price on rifles and surplus ammo: Mosin 91/30, M44 carbine, SVT40...

A russian re-furb that I bought because my son loved "Enemy at the gates". I floated the barrel , installed shims, Bubba bent the bolt( doh!), and put on a 4 X 32 Barsk scope. Burned a case of ammo through it; for what it is it's actually pretty fun. No noise , no recoil, accurate & cheap to shoot.
A Sako M-39 that is not refurbed & a VTK M-39 that I've...well...never actually seen (importing from US can be a real PITA).
But the Sako shoots good, feels really good in the hand; hit's what I aim at.
And the SVT-40...oops got off topic there, sorry.

I used to think exactly the same thing back in the eighties when they were selling for 40 and 50 bucks. Ammo was cheaper than dirt, surplus was everywhere. I should have got it out of my system back then when it was cheap, but I thought they were ugly and didn't ever see myself shooting one. I thought the same thing of Lee Enfeilds and Mausers.
Got a 1945 Izveshk M44 and a 1928 Tula ex-Dragoon. I love them with a depraved unholy passion. Robust, simple, well-designed, nearly indestructible, surprisingly accurate, powerful, boomy, and gotta love the bayonets. I really have to carefully watch myself or else I'll start sliding down the slippery slope of Mosin collecting...
Whats a real blast is shooting it with the bayonet attached-the looks you get at the range are amusing, plus these rifles were sighted in with the bayo fitted, so your accuracy may improve somewhat. (My '44 Tula ex sniper shoots cloverleafs with the pigsticker on it.)
Surplus only so far. I also had to set the rear sight to 300 to get it level with my bulls-eye.
