Got out for a hunt this morning and got my first coyote of the year. Good sized male dog with a pretty decent coat. He had a bald patch about the size of a chicken egg just behind his right shoulder as you can see in the first pic. I brushed the entire dog down and other than a few dead hairs and burrs, no clumps of hair or anything unusual anywhere. Perhaps someone with more experience can tell me if that looks like mange or just a rub spot?

Anyhow, I usually give the ones that have decent coats away and let Mother Nature take care of the ones that don’t but I decided I should give skinning and home tanning a go! It is a bit of work, that’s for sure! I’m using the method outlined previously by fratri (thanks!) - I’ve seen the great results of his handiwork so I figured I would stick to that. I don’t have a fleshing board so opted to pin it for fleshing. Will end up hanging the finished hide on the wall or draping it over a sofa chair anyhow.

Nice work! That bald spot is known by either wolf mange or fur mites. He's actually missing quite a bit of fur. A well furred coyote will have long gaurd hairs covering that whole shoulder/spine area.

Always good to get one. Nice job !

What distance was he at when he received his copper supplement vitamin injection to fix his fur ?

He's missing a bunch of hair up there. Not much for guard hair on the shoulders.
What ya got going for a gun there ? Looks good

Go get some more !

Sorry, I should have posted more details! I always plan on doing a play by play with pictures like you do Fratri but then I end up so damn excited I don’t think to take the appropriate pics until I’m already home!

The rifle is nothing fancy but shoots straight. It’s a mossberg mvp in 223 scoped with a bushnell elite 3500.

Fields were icy as hell and noisy! Walking out in the dark I figured I must have sounded like a Sherman tank. Wind wasn’t terrible but was from the east. Played a few coyote vocals to start then some quiet distress calls with the foxpro.

About 7:30 am I see a dark shape at the edge of the field on my left, east of my position so I know he won’t wind me. Binos up and sure enough it’s a darker dog mousing about 175yds away. I bump up the volume on the call and he looks but doesn’t seem too interested. He turns to go up the edge of the field away from me and looks like he is leaving. I bump the volume again and he stops and sits down, facing the call. I quickly guess the range to be about 200, put that dot on his chest and touch one off. Down he goes. I played some pup distress for a couple minutes but nothing else showed so I stand up, put the range finder on him and he’s 189yds away. That is the furthest I’ve ever shot one. The top pic is just as I found him.

Thats some good shooting.... front chest shot with shooting sticks or ?

Not exactly ;) . No shooting sticks just my knee. My windage was bang on but I ended up hitting him higher than planned. I didn’t probe around for an entry wound but the exit hole was a dime-sized spot right at the base of the skull, equidistant from each ear. It was quick. Follow-up shot not required.

Nice shooting. As it looks like it has mites and probably not worth skinning. I usually throw them in the garbage pile when they have mites. Not bad this year but last year threw about 45% to the pile

That looks like the early stages of mange . Not a good idea to bring that thing home and skin it in your garage , now you run the risk of your dog or cats getting infected.

Well after following Fratri’s instructions, both those posted on CGN and those given to me via PMs, my first attempt at skinning and tanning a coyote hide is complete. You can see where he had a bit of mange around the shoulder area but otherwise he was in decent shape. Learned a lot in the process. This was a good coyote to learn on because he wasn’t perfect and neither was I ;). Again, can’t thank Fratri enough for his guidance.

Tail looks a little funky in that second pic but it was just the angle I took the pic from.

All and all, it looks pretty good.... Next one will be a little easier...Good job putting in the effort.
Display it with pride.
Congrats
