Future South Africa Visit- help wanted

Folks on 24hr CF seem very pleased with Jim Hackiewicz of Hunting Adventures. He had a really good post on that site's Africa forum about Eastern Cape vs Northern Provinces (basically indigenous vs transplanted).

You may want to look at a map. Malawi isn't part of South Africa. It is in southern Africa, but it's a long way from South Africa.

You might want to read these too.

While many South African ranches are fenced....they are far from canned hunts. The trick is to do your research and more importantly decide what game you want to hunt, what experience you want and what your budget is before you begin.

Are you sure it's Malawi? That's a skinny little country in between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

There is good hunting to be had in RSA but it will almost certainly be behind wire. How big an area depends on the operator but they vary from very small to enormous. The joke is that any farmer with a half an acre and a duiker is a PH so you will definitely want to do your due diligence. I would start by checking out the PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa) website at www.phasa.co.za/and visiting their members via the links on the members drop down.

Well said, South Africa is a funny place when it comes to hunting, and I say this having family there and having hunted there more than anywhere in Africa.

Be prepared as it sounds you are to hunt a game farm, this can be surprisingly challenging hunting despite the image you'll get in your head when you hear "farm". It truly is a farm, but also an admirable industry making money from and providing habitat for endemic species. That kicks the crap out of the usual surrounding cattle and maize farms. The areas can also be unbelievably expansive, or, you can find yourself running into fences every half hour. Research and reference checks will pay huge given the variety of quality.

Just go in with a stocked upland bird preserve mentality, that is to say a good sporting time as a hunting tourist, and you will have a wonderful time. This all said, some of the species can be a huge challenge even on the "farms"! I've had some of my best times in Africa with my brother around fires in the Limpopo. Some of my worst in Zimbabwe, but my best hunt was up there too. Africa has many different sides and South Africa is the tamest one. For a pure vacation, nothing wrong with that.

As for areas, I really enjoyed the Kalahari beyond Kuruman in South Africa, large areas due to the low carrying capacity for animals in the Kalahari, and home of the Gemsbok, my favourite plains game species. You'll have a ton of recommendations in this thread but I can make you a couple and some good family trip advice if you want to PM.
