I realize that, but I haven't heard anyone around here having a problem with rounds cooking off. Just wondering if it's prevalent or if this is trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

My opinion : I think due to the nature and purpose of the IAR, which is incline to be used more often in full auto than the traditionnal M4, it would be more prone to cook off (not meaning it would). So to diminish the risk to a minimum, they put the open bolt thing.

Like they say : I'd rather have it (the open bolt thing) and not needing it than needing it and not have it.

48th Highlander Texas you guys make awesome stuff. I've read many people say they plan to use your piston uppers for their builds, you've got a great brand reputation, and it's cool that you post here.

Also, most users are aware of the potential for cook off and will keep that in mind while fireing, stopping when the rifle becomes to warm, slowing the rate of fire, etc.

It is possible to cook off rounds in a bolt action if you shoot it enough. That would take a lot of shooting though.

Plus if it's hot enough to cook-off rounds then you've ####ed your barrel.

I'd imagine a 50 cal bolt gun would turn pretty damn hot after 20 or so rounds... Who knows?

i understand the ultimax 100 was being submited after fire control module was modified to permit select fire capabilty as per marine requirement and magazine well modifications.as far as automatic rifleman concept, whatever works i guess, kind of like the LSW being issued to brit sections for long range bipod supported semi auto fire.being an ex lmgunner,its the 4 round burst that increases hit probabilty at ranges beyond riflemen. because this rifle firing from an open bolt is within the same package dimensions as the m4 i suggest submitting it as replacement for the current general issue rifle.give it a piston gas system,heavy stellite lined barrel that can handle thousands of rounds (like that maremont m60) as it has no quick barrel change capability,fire from open in auto and closed in semi, change the rifleing to just under stabilise the issue rounds,offer it 6.5 grendal with 35 or 40 round magazines with reinforced and strengthened feed lips.my xmas wish list and make everyone an iarifleman if needed

I've cooked off M4A1's that went back to shooting near submoa when cooled with Mk262...

The IAR solicitation in LWRC's candidate gives a system which is shorter and more accurate than the M16A4 -- it may ened up being a better choice for the MAJORITY of the rifle squads.

I dont agree with the replacement of the M249 with the IAR concept - but augmentation and the M249 fleet needs an overhaul -- the Mk46 with a PARA barrel (as opposed to its very light one) would make a better Urban LMG than the 2x4 M249 setup that most of the UMSC guns I';ve seen are showing a GREAT deal of age.

I liked their CQ barrel variant better - but the USMC removed it as a requirement/desired feature.

I understood that the Marine Corps would have been fine with M16's being semi-auto only, period. If that mindset, which isn't entirely un-understandable, is still in place, making every marine an automatic-rifleman would seem a big policy change.

These ARE the guys who put pistons in AR15 uppers.
